We exist and we are close to burn out (but workload says we are still under loaded)
if your press asks for names, give 6 to 8--NOT the biggest, most senior stars in your field. None of them will do it. part of the problem is that the ppl best poised are "mid-career"--i.e. have a book, tenure. TWIST: the mid-career folx, IF THEY EXIST, are so fucking overloaded I can't even tell you

"Reading other people’s programs is an art which should be learnt and practised because it is useful!"

Feels like I'm reading @felienne.bsky.social The Programmer's Brain, but no, it's just J. Lions' 1977 magnum opus, "A Commentary on the Sixth Edition of the Unix Operating System"

finally, literate programming
Screamingly recommended. It is oddly quite emotional to step through the lines and understand how it boots. Proper secret knowledge back in the day. On paper is so nice but I just found this: warsus.github.io/lions-/

I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.

This is happening in cross-stitch too. There are a lot of people making "patterns" that are just AI pictures or real art that has been run through a pixel filter that doesn't look good, doesn't match up with DMC threads, and doesn't make any sense.
I hate that we have to scrutinize everything🫠

Somewhere a neuroscientist is planning to build their career on brain scans of people that were exposed to AI slop as children
lol this rocks

taking my children to see the nativity mural painted on the olde drugstore facade downtown and accidentally giving them PTSD from a hieronymous bosch version of rudolph getting eaten by elves

CLN: rename ~~tokenization~~ -> `nuggeting`
I feel that gives the math too much primacy, when the actual problem is the words. The dead hand of millions of souls all attempting to sway us with their lingering thoughts.

When we force chicken slurry through a sieve to purify it, we still name the resulting nugget after its progenitor.

I have many questions

First of all: who in Bristol wanted naming rights on the stool scale

Second: is it the same person who chose to put one phrase in the stool type summaries in ALL CAPS
Someone close to me in hospital dealing with some $#!^.

Am currently reading about The Bristol Stool Form Scale which is... well... I am reproducing it for you.

The Eric Schickler essay in Larry Bartel's symposium on "What Trump Has Taught Us About Political Science" is one of the most insightful pieces I've read in 2025.

US institutions turned out to be weak, and we have to rethink conventional wisdom.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

This is concerning.

NIH is changing their policy so that staff have to prepare justification for every application that is funded BUT NO DOCUMENTATION FOR APPLICATIONS THAT ARE SKIPPED (BASED ON PERCENTILES).

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.
