What we say vs what we do

Say
🌎 Climate crisis: we need to rapidly decarbonize
🏘️ Housing crisis: we need more and cheaper housing

Do
🌎 Climate crisis: let’s put 154% tariff on cheap solar and 100% on cheap EVs
🏘️ Housing crisis: Let’s heavily restrict multifamily housing and tax it like it’s a sin
jensvb.bsky.social
I first read that as 15.4%. Holy moly, we really don’t want solar in Canada.

So if I understand this correctly - Because Vancouver has created zones that theoretically allow multiplexes, instead of having defaultish SFH zoning, this doesn't apply to them? It would only apply if they had original SFH zoning that had been updated to align with multiplexes?

I'm so ready for the Park Board x Bitcoin Election! (I'm not ready)

The pocket of low-rise at the top right of your image is also very silly.

You're probably looking at the Jericho Lands future development by the local first nations. It's development plan was approved this year, so it's been included. The UBC skytrain extension will pass through the development. When that eventually happens there will be a similar corridor of land use

Nanaimo has a huge primary healthcare deficit - This article states 20,000 without a family doctor. The south end has like one walk-in clinic. Council choosing not to support additional healthcare because they worry it will only be used by the unhoused is insane.

Eby repealed a carbon tax that had been working in BC for almost 2 decades in order to make gas a bit cheaper, and handed out $410 million to drivers for basically no reason. And now there's no money for active transport grants. 300 people a year are killed in BC in motor vehicle crashes.

Interesting presser today with Premier David Eby, who seems to be hitting his rhetorical stride in response to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's push for the feds to prioritize a new pipeline through BC to the north coast
#bcpoli
“If Alberta gets a $50 billion publicly funded pipeline, then I want a $50 billion federal guarantee for projects in British Columbia as well. And I want $50 billion for every province across Canada and every territory, because their projects are just as damn important as Alberta’s pipeline is.”

Keeping increasingly nuts suburban voters out of city politics must be a core goal of urbanists in the next decade
hubhistory.com
One overlooked aspect of this year's mayoral election is the hollowed out Boston media landscape. Yes, the Globe and Herald spent months smearing @wutrain.bsky.social in their reporting and editorials, but the Globe and Herald are written, edited, and mostly read by suburbanites who can't vote here.

The geniuses of Boston real estate never considered that a very popular mayor would win her election.

Prayer groups, book clubs, scavenger hunts, pub nights, debating clubs, knitting circles, park hangs, roller disco nights, bike trips, hiking groups, run clubs, etc.

There is absolutely no reason why politicians and civil society leaders can't be organizing these events.

It’s underappreciated just how radical ABC's budget proposal is. It requires deep, deep cuts.

If they are approved, it’s impossible to tell what’s on the chopping block. Libraries? Community centres? Investments that improve public safety?

I don’t know - and I don’t think ABC knows, either.
Vancouver Sun

Big cuts are coming to Vancouver City Hall. Will they be 'reckless' or the cost-saving efficiency Ken Sim has long promised?
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is directing city staff to find millions in savings, which could mean slashing hundreds of jobs. He says "there’s room to be more disciplined in how the city operates." His rivals call the proposed cuts "reckless."

E-bike subsidy programs are one of those perfect policies with zero downsides. Accessible, healthy, low cost, and moves people away from car use. AND IT MAKES PEOPLE REALLY HAPPY!!

Steven Leonard has been housebound since 2010, since a bad back surgery left him unable to walk. Then his wife, Muriel, found out about the City of Boston's E-Bike Incentive Program.

Realistically, most people probably don't really care. the YIMBYs say yes housing everywhere, and NIMBYs say not housing right here (and sometimes not anywhere)
nickrae.bsky.social
But second, YIMBYs advocate for removing their own right to block housing, both away and nearby. They understand that saying "not here" also means "not anywhere", because of what you said. The solution isn't yes housing here, it's yes housing everywhere
nickrae.bsky.social
I think there's two things to unpack here. First, I think yimbys inherently are more likely to support housing in their neighbourhood as they understand better the benefits to new housing nearby. Does that mean that each yimby is going to support every project? No.
nickrae.bsky.social
YIMBY generally means then, lets make it easier to build everywhere so that localized power dynamics have less influence over individual projects. YIMBY = new housing everywhere == theoretically housing next door
nickrae.bsky.social
I mean that is the core of NIMBY, is that its always about THEIR backyard. Most nimby start with "I support housing" but it always ends with "but not this housing here, it doesn't fit." Functionally, in this system it then becomes 'who can yell the loudest'
nickrae.bsky.social
Last week I spoke at a public hearing for a building two buildings over. It'll probably block light coming into my kitchen for like an hour in the mornings! Yes in my hypothetical backyard!

End the homeowner grant ($1b)!!!

(That's when the province pays part of homeowners' property taxes for no reason! It was initially implemented as a vote buying scheme! Renters are subsidizing homeowners in BC!)
kellyblack.ca
I can find the BC government nearly $4 billion:

1) Reinstate the carbon tax ($2.8B)
2) Cancel electrification funding for LNG ($200M)
3) Cancel 7 soccer games in Vancouver ($650M)

That was easy. Maybe I should be the Minister of Finance.
