One of the big media failures of the past decade is the ongoing search for the deeper side of Trump. There isn't one. His ideology, such as it is, is personalist, transactional, and zero-sum. That's as vain, vulgar, and wrong as you can get. He likes gold shit and applause. There's nothing beneath.
10 years of this shit

Cynicism is what allowed people to say “both sides” for far too long. To be clear I mean the dual cynicism amongst both elites and the electorate.
I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

This should be a national shutdown
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager
“We Are Facing a Tsunami of Hate”: Amid ICE Crackdown, Unions and Community Groups Call for Minnesota Shutdown in 10 Days
Following the ICE murder of Renee Good and an assault on the state by federal immigration forces, a labor-community coalition is calling for residents to refuse to work, shop or go to school on Januar...

DHS has always been nonsensical. “Homeland Security” is a distinction w/o difference from “Defense”. If immigration is a national security issue, house the agents there.
anyway as i have said many times — and literally just wrote on saturday — i think we should abolish ICE as well as unravel DHS and i welcome elected officials who embrace both outright but i am also aware that any senate majority will contain moderate and conservative democrats who need an on-ramp.

The real danger here is conceding that indeed we cannot believe our lying eyes
Every second the murderer is not arrested is another second for feds to hide him in a place that would create a jurisdictional fight. He's on video killing a person. You have to arrest this guy an hour ago, but you might still have time now.

Yes billionaires famously believe in non-zero-sum thinking and express this belief through their generous support of the social safety net
The perfect Yglesias post: declaring “billionaires are good, actually,” as if it was some bold, counterintuitive take.

Under no circumstances is it advantageous to argue with Nazis on their own ground.

Matt, you used to have worthwhile ideas to contribute. What happened?
As we see in the replies from the hardcore bluesky fans, the counter view isn't that the right is more dangerous than I think it's that Elon Twitter is more rigged than I think so there's no point in participating.

because that isn't what they believe or how they feel
Why can't one of these guys just say something like: "Yes, I'm a Republican. But more importantly, I'm an American and a human being. And what the President has (posted/said/done) is simply wrong."

I mean, what is the worst that could happen? They regain some dignity??
Rep. Carlos Gimenez defends Trump's racist AI videos: "You're gonna see more of these things happen, and so people need to develop a little bit thicker skin ... if you complain about it you're just going to get more of it"

What the fuck is this bullshit
Charlie Kirk delivered hard-line ideas while orchestrating viral moments, creating a template that other influencers adopted. Here’s a look at how he constructed his confrontations.

They just tear-gassed us. They tried to run us over in a van holding a peaceful protester. They shot us with pepper balls. They dragged another protester into the facility.
moments ago, ice agents again came out of the broadview detention/“professing” facility to escort a silver suv out of the lot.

one of the agents picked up and threw congressional candidate kat abughazaleh to the ground.

States can mitigate that to a certain extent — they can get rid of some hoops. But states have very limited funds, and they might not have the cash to pay for vaccines in the same way the federal government does. That's really going to hurt poor kids

Not hypocritical. Clearly they just think the rules of civility don't apply to them. It's also clear that the reason they do this is because they believe the sentiment that democrats or other out-groups are less deserving of the rights and laws that protect conservatives; they express it often
Remember, every time they clutch their pearls over something someone said about them, they are lying hypocritical shitbirds.
Trump on Ilhan Omar: "I think she's a disgraceful person. A loser. It's amazing the way people vote, I know it's people from her area of the world, they got here and they vote her in — it's hard to believe. But I think she's a disgusting person."
