Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things

Two Florida lawmakers have unveiled a novel escalation in the attack on trans people: legislation that would make it illegal for state, county, and local employers to discipline or fire employees who harass or bully their transgender coworkers under the guise of “belief.”
New Florida Bill Would Protect Anti-Trans Discrimination in the Workplace
The bill’s “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” provisions would also have sweeping consequences for hospitals and health agencies.

Islamophobia is being normalized at the highest levels. Christians need to learn to fight it.

Another great @gregsargent.bsky.social thread on efforts to #FreeKilmar. The admin's plan to persecute Kilmar, and in process, to arrogate power, and to vitiate judicial guardrails has backfired. My only addition would be to say "For now, the lower courts *AND KILMAR* are admirably...."
It's hard to know exactly what will happen now, given how unprecedented this is. But Trump and Miller envisioned this as a test of their ability to spread fear of lawless state terror. For now, the lower courts are admirably defending the rule of law. 5/5

The 1942 Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire in #Boston killed nearly 500 people.

Having saving measures in place to prevent future tragedies like that from occurring is the least we can do.
Worcester things I don't understand:

How any business is allowed to operate without sufficient fire suppression systems and why people get pissy about it when they get told they have to update.

I know it costs money but like... this is basic necessity infrastructure.

Whenever I've done interviews about my reporting on the James Carver case, I've pointed out that you can spend as much money as you want prosecuting and jailing people for arson. But if you actually want to prevent deaths, then basic fire safety is what's most important.
While it wasn't the focus of my reporting, one of the reasons the Elliott Chambers Rooming House fire was so deadly (15 killed and more injured) was that the building lacked several key fire-safety features, one of those being an automated sprinkler system.
My latest for @theappeal.org:

James Carver spent 36 years in prison after he was convicted of setting one of the deadliest fires in #Massachusetts history. But after reviewing new scientific evidence, a judge set him free.

“They took my life away for nothing,” Carver said.
