First, an earthquake hit Alaska. Then it was a typhoon. People turned to public radio for lifesaving information. Sen. Lisa Murkowski tried to get her colleagues to understand the importance of stations.

They voted to defund public media anyway.
In rural America, public radio saves lives
In remote Alaska, public radio station KYUK is crucial during natural disasters. Without federal funding, how will it survive?

Seriously, what other president is even remotely in his league?

There was corruption in the Grant and Harding administrations, but the presidents were largely uninvolved. Nixon committed crimes in secret but didn't really line his own pockets.

Trump is like a Thomas Nast cartoon come to life.

I look forward to this list every year. If you’re a non-tenure-track historian who has published work this year, this is a great opportunity to promote it.
Haven't received as many contributions as usual for this year's lists--could be many things, but one aspect is surely that our ability to get this in front of people is much diminished. If you know folks whose stuff should be on here, please suggest it! contingentmagazine.org/yearly-pub-l...

Federal law requires furloughed workers be granted backpay.

Seasonal employees across our national parks were asked to stay available during the federal government shutdown. It is not only against the law to refuse to pay them, it is cruel.

This post I think correctly points out that the huge network of off-shore engagement accounts points less toward a concerted foreign effort to destabilize the US and more toward the observable fact that MAGA is a group of the dumbest idiots on the planet
"This has all been especially painful for X users who are, as a baseline, extremely racist. And they are now suffering through the psychic torment of learning that users, predominately from the Global South, are behind some of the bigger right-wing accounts on the site."

Letting Silicon Valley Geoengineer the Atmosphere Will End Badly
We already have plenty of evidence of what happens when things better left to governments — which in this case might decide to never flip the switch at all — are ceded to private industry.
