A Cool and Lonely Courage
This is an ENNIE-nominated tragic role playing story game about the women of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) during world war 2, for two to five players.

Part of my interest in this film is that Krystyna Skarbek aka Christine Granville was one of the amazing women who inspired my Ennie-nominated game “A Cool and Lonely Courage” - the women spies of the SOE in WW2 France

I think the idea that ‘numbers go up’ isn’t the only way of rating something is quite nice - and that a reputation can be useful or a hindrance depending on what they want to hire you to do!
November 25, 2025 at 3:58 PM
Although you can have a good reputation or a bad reputation, and whether that is useful enough depends on what someone wants from you.

If your reputation is pure you would be great for escorting the prince.

If your reputation is bastardly you would be great for stabbing the prince!

Picked up a few of these, so if you buy You Meet In A Tavern, You Die In A Dungeon & The Dungeon Deck at Dragonmeet, you can get it in a nice black cardboard guy with an Ursidice sticker on it and a free poster

Reputation could be a good one - which is subtly different from Deeds.

Deeds = What you have done
Reputation = What people THINK you have done

I recently spent an afternoon at the holocaust exhibit at the Imperial War Museum, London. They put a lot of effort into explaining the rise of fascism as well as its terrible outcome. As historical information it was somewhat terrifying how things were changing slowly, then all at once.

“The lesson from 1933 is you get out sooner rather than later”

That shocking statement was from a Yale professor who studied fascism and decided to leave the US in June this year, putting her money where her mouth is, so to speak.

I really enjoyed playtesting this game! And I think the changes Alex outlines here will make it even better, so I'm very into this!
I've written up the #Metatopia2025 playtest notes for my upcoming game "Escape the Apocalypse" and you can read them here if you fancy a bit of insight into the development of a game

The playtesting was SO helpful.

I loved that your group were playing retired people and all spontaneously decided to play a variant of your dads!

True - that's an aspect of old twitter that I miss

BTW, this was previously called 'Escape to Utopia', but I decided on a rename that captured what it was about more clearly!

A variant that my older daughter used when revising for her A levels is a youtube 'study with me channel' which is a similar thing but just a random person studying. e.g. youtu.be/_ZqJjlnGSSo?...

Online study buddies.

I'm currently doing that for my daughter at university. We are on a facetime call, I'm muted, just doing my work over here and it she can see me out of the corner of her eye and is doing her work over there.

Very good for both of us.

From the first time I read of her accomplishments and bravery I wondered that there hadn't been a dramatisation of it. I do hope that they have done her justice - and perhaps encourage people to find out more - such as through your book
