Had two cases of plagiarism by AI this week. And while the students are accountable for their actions (since my policy is crystal clear), the exploitative nature of the tech itself and its proselytizing overlords is very much part of the equation.

This technology is so clearly designed to profit off cheating and struggling students--its insidious. And yet universities keep announcing how they're allowing this company into its midst, to exploit and incapacitate our students even more
A photo from Jamie Keller Davis for the NYT: a color photo of a Chicago skyline showing three buildings photographed from street level. The one in the center has brown brick-like walls, and a very large poster advertising ChatGPT. The poster shows a conversation between a hypothetical student and ChatGPT: "Can you quiz me on the muscles of the leg?" "Can you build me a first time marathon training plan?" The text at the bottom of the poster reads: "ChatGPT Plus is free during finals.

People are rightly pointing out that Marilyn was abused and exploited. That’s fair; it’s a division t way to treat her memory. But she was also a gifted comedian and the idea that slop will do her talent justice is ridiculous.

antifascist and anti-capitalist organizers need to understand space as one site of struggle because our opposition definitely understand it as one

Low Earth orbit is filling up. Not just with #satellites, but also with dangerous, tumbling debris. As they collide, they multiply. If we do nothing, satellites will crash, creating chaos on Earth below. Meet the people trying to prevent this disaster. spectrum.ieee.org/kessler-synd...

Ea-Nāşir's perfidy seems eternal!
Comic

Panel one. Stick finger singing, "Raindrops on rose/ And whiskers on kittens."

Panel two. Same stick figure holding pot and singing, "Bright copper kettles leave/ ...Flakes on my mittens!?"

Panel three. Same figure still holding pot and singing, "Hey, these are stone with a copper veneer!"

Fourth panel. Same stick figure has put down pot and is singing, "I've been bamboozled by Ea-Nāşir!"

I finally tried Ethiopian food and let me tell you: I am all in on the injera hype. Then there was the handwashing, the delicious stews, the chilli relish, the tej honey wine - a 10/10 experience all round.

It’s dispiriting that this is what getting a COVID vaccination now looks like to this chronic asthmatic.

But if you drive a train under a bridge near me, the expected signal is from 2 Unlimited- No Limit

Oh, I will have to check that out! I have a tiny bit about eugenics c. 1913 in my book.

I’ve never really read any before, but I encountered some of his criticism recently while doing some research on something else, and I enjoyed his turn of phrase.

That’s a great one. Also makes me think of Harry Lime on the ferris wheel

Just hoping all this sinus pain goes away so that 1) I don’t fall massively behind with teaching prep and 2) I am well enough to enjoy SELF ESTEEM this weekend

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

The Ig Nobel is incredible , one year an Indian guy won it for calculating the average surface area of an elephant and during his acceptance they had an elephant hold up a sign with the surface area of the scientist on it, they do showbiz better than the Oscars

Video: a Japanese scientist was attacked by flies while giving the acceptance speech for his Ig Nobel Prize-winning research paper that proved painting Zebra-like stripes on cows led to a decrease in biting fly attacks.

Farewell to Patricia Routledge. I saw in Anouilh’s Wild Orchids at Chichester in 2002. That lady had star power!

I’ve been despising this avalanche of Grammarly ads: the workplace ones normalise overwork and deskilling, while those targeted at students basically tell them not to trust their own judgement or ability and that they should run everything through their linguistic peristalsis
courtneymilan.com
I just had a Grammarly ad inflicted on me where they said they could add sources to your student papers.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Thinking about a relative who did a large chunk of the first year, was doing really well, was dropped by their employer, and now has to repeat the whole year with a different employer.

I had no idea that the completion rate was so low for apprenticeships, although I’m not altogether surprised, based on family experiences

Do the numbers.

Apprenticeship starts:

Apprenticeship completions (for comparison, most recent university completion rate statistic is 89%):
