New followers: hello! I’m a poet + professor + currently an MFA program director. I walk a lot. I live in WI near water. I post opportunities for writers, pics of my cats, poems, stray thoughts, political stuff + other stuff. I have two kids who play 7 instruments between them including tuba. 🎶

“Today’s poem considers how we regard ourselves—our physical selves. It’s a poem I love, a poem that I see a lot of beauty in,” shares host @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social in today’s episode.

the kimmel thing is bad but as long as they arent rounding people up indiscriminately based on race, building concentration camps and talking about eradicating those they deem sexual deviants, i think we’ll be ok

A union that represents university professors published a guide tailored to help its members navigate social media during the “current climate.”

The advice? Lock down your social media accounts, expect anything you post will be screenshotted.

It’s possible you might want to read my poem in the new issue of Bennington Review taken almost entirely from lines in the @nytimes.com that begin with “Scientists say…”? www.benningtonreview.org/fourteen-mei... #ecopoetry #poetry

remember folks, we cant have gun restrictions because if we do the federal government will occupy our streets, imprison people without due process, ship dissidents to foreign gulags and things of that nature

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

“If this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Israel just killed him.

I think it’s worth noting this piece generated the most unsubscribes I’ve seen in a while, and the newsletter version had the lowest open rate in many months. These horrors persist in part because too many people go to great pains to avoid them.

NEW from me — FEMA staffers say the response to the Texas floods is horrifyingly slow, and it may be because of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's recent increased control over how the agency spends money.

"If this is how they are going to do a major hurricane response, people are fucked.”

He was smart, kind, and committed to exploring important issues that ranged from political to spiritual to intellectual, and everything in between. He was a wonderful storyteller, a journalist with integrity, and a mensch who brought interesting people together and into his orbit. RIP Bill. 3/3

It’s not an exaggeration to say that my experience on the set of Genesis, and editing the transcripts for the series, changed my life—it’s why I went on to do a graduate degree in religious studies, and studied religious texts for 15+ years. Bill Moyers was a gem. 2/3

Throughout 1996, before, during, and after my senior year in college I worked as a production assistant for Bill Moyers on his PBS series Genesis: A Living Conversation as a side hustle for extra cash. 1/3

New — I wrote about how Zohran Mamdani’s win shows the power of a positive vision for the future, New Yorkers’ rejection of fear-based politics, and provides a blueprint for progressive Jews and Muslims to create a multi-racial, multi-faith coalition that supports prosperity for all.

Read it here:

Zohran Mamdani proved you can fully embrace progressive values—and win.
