Device…hoarding. Because you don’t go get a new one while yours is still fine.

Apparently I am also practicing car hoarding, house hoarding, husband hoarding, dog hoarding, computer hoarding, furniture hoarding and art hoarding.
stupid young people, stop buying a new phone every year if you don't want to be broke. wait no, not like that.

What gets me about this--apart from it being evil--is how the TOS make plain that no, LLMs are neither alive, nor conscious, nor intelligent. Because if *it* telling you to commit suicide qualifies as you *using* it, then it's not intelligent, now is it?

Also, this is evil.
Additionally, OpenAI argues its not liable because Raine, by using ChatGPT for self-harm, broke its terms of service

It’s so cool to have hitched your wagon 20 years ago to an industry that was booming beyond anyone’s expectations and have it turn out to be stripmined and utterly hollowed out by Shareholder Value, and every other industry you could slot into has been, surprise, hollowed out by Shareholder Value

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

I don't know that these people would care, necessarily, but I think many of them either genuinely do not know (or perhaps refuse to know) how little most authors actually make
We’re not small business owners, ffs - we’re independent contractors, and we are routinely robbed by the world’s dumbest dingbats.

This is so important. This is a prime example of why having stasis/agreed-upon definitions/shared intelligibility matters in our collective resistance to toxic masculinity culture.

I’m tired of “asexual” being conflated with “incel” & I’m tired of asexuality being treated as an optional subject.
Aspec language being used by allo people in ways that erase their aspec meanings point to the necessity for expanding aspec literacy for allo people.
Allo people need aspec literacy, too.
There's value in extending our education efforts to catch allos up to speed on our lives and experiences.

I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Doing something cool today. Sat on the sabbatical committee 2 yrs ago. Advocated for an artist who hoped to collab with a museum to design part of a new race/racism exhibit. He got the sabbatical.... Exhibit just opened & I made it EC for students. Heading down to the museum to check it out myself!

Libraries are free for you to use, serve the public good, are great, support creators financially and, I cannot be clear enough about this-- ARE FREE FOR YOU TO USE-- so pirating books makes you kind of an asshole, not some Marxist revolutionary.

If the book you want isn't there *request it.*

I'm gunna be honest this is exactly what editors want when they say "authentic"
King's books, many of which i have read and enjoyed, are conspicuously absent from Bad Indians Book Club.

In case you were wondering if this was something a lot of us already knew.

Yes! CEO's do maybe an 8 hour day of what vaguely qualfies work & the insane salaries are for playing Businessman doing Business rituals. Which isn't that hard as just having the title mean most actions are the correct performance of ritual - unlike office workers who have tougher empty rituals.
I just love that we work in a system built on performative business.

Like, your average desk job can probably be done—successfully and competently—in a 3-day work week.

But no. We gotta be here 40 hours a week; 25 of which us corporate drones have to pretend we're actually busy.

Whenever I say this, people get Really Mad, but it's true. Same of any other art, too. You have to read the book, watch the film, see the painting, listen to the song, whatever.

I'm sorry, but watching a video about it on YouTube is not enough. You have not experience the art.
"you have not played the game unless you've played the game" is one of my more annoying but unshakable opinions
the whole "don't play the game, just watch a video on youtube that will explain its story to you" is so disheartening because the issue of accessibility is genuinely really important but it's always just people who want to be spoon-fed nicely quantifiable information
