Off grid is REALLY hard and you need several acres for firewood/food trees and a lot more solar/battery than we have

But live as if the world is at war, because if nothing else, quite a lot of it is at war with you

We have put 13 yrs and ALL my wife's Uni lecturer income into a project that starts with, "what can we do to reduce our need for income?"
We used 71 kWh in the last 7 days and bought 6.1, of which part was to recharge the car last weekend after Linda went to Hamilton

I had years of practice getting up without thinking, have a shower, make and eat breakfast and, in Blenheim anyway, walk to work in radio by 6.30
It's the "don't think about it, just do it' bit that has been so valuable
I also aim (often fail) to end the day with "1 more small thing" before supper

It started out as a way to check my state of mind, if I could freely get up 1hr before I needed to, I could mark it as OK, I spend the time doing 5min jobs mostly, the little stuff that otherwise never gets done or is put off because I'm busy
That itself feeds into feeling positive

I'd love an Aga, their thermal mass is huge, but the cost would make my eyes bleed
We can get this up to heat in about 45 minutes and then it takes very little to keep it 180/200 for as long as we like
Since we use "small wood" 20-30mm to fire it up, it's better than chipping it

It's about 25% more expensive than when we got it in 2019, but for 2 people we can run it about every 4 days over the winter to heat the water and cook meals for nuking later or a little use of the gas hob

If the asset strip pumped cash into the economy so we all felt better off, that might work in the short term to get them through the project
But they are also sucking money out of the rest of the economy as well to feed to their tax cut buddies
the effects will be very quick, may be here already

Someone pointed out yesterday that US GDP growth is 2.6% but if you take out the AI-driven data centre splurge, that falls to ~0.1%, AI is 4% 0f the economy, but 96% of the GDP growth

Battery 59%, cells producing 0.4kW, just enough for the house and showing 95% of the power we use provided from the roof in the last 7 days
TBF, all our hot water and most of the cooking is provided by the woodfired oven that ran for 5 hours twice in that time, using prunings from the trees.

25yrs ago I invented a model I call "The Lucky Jew", who saw in 1931/2, that this time WAS different, & in the face of reassurance, resistance, criticism & mockery, packed their lives into small suitcases to flee Germany with their families to start again

Or do we need to subtract the fuel use of the ploughs/drills/pesticides/harvesters/trucks/fermenters/maintenance/replacement from that total?

As distinct from, you know, build once, plug in to the grid and wash twice a year
