wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

I kinda wish more creators felt comfortable to put up patreons (or similar) and offer nothing guaranteed in return.

Like, I like the stuff you make, and I'd like you to have slightly better financial stability to be able to make more. I don't need a new thing every month to justify that.

Every kid in the school is within a 1.5 km (1 mile) radius and there's no car drop off area.

It makes sense, and we're only about 1km away from the school, but it's just a long round trip when we have other drop offs to do in the morning!

(We bike in nice weather but not in the snow)

And I get why the school has a "walk to school only" policy but he is such a slow walker 😭

Oh I'm so sorry 😭

Our Thursdays are better but still not great because kindie is in a different catchment for reasons??

8:30: drop off J (25 min round trip)
8:52: bus drop-off for M
3:05: pick up J (25 min walk)
3:45: meet M's bus
5:15-6: swim for M
6:45-7:15: swim for J

Gahhhh

yeah this is why I can't read most historical fiction because I am constantly going "what about the DRAINS"

My other pet peeve is writers of queer historic fiction who have clearly never picked up a book on historic queer identities, and their bibliographies show it.
And the thing is largely that's not necessarily unreasonable. But when you DO know about those things it's impossible not to see the gaps in people's awareness Absolutely Everywhere

Yeah, I'm an oldest daughter too and just ... it's a lot.
January 14, 2026 at 8:05 PM
(also, just to clarify, I know many people who are raising large families and thriving -- my point is just that expectations for parents to supervise, monitor and engage their kids are really high these days, and it's hard)
January 14, 2026 at 8:01 PM
Yeah, like, grandparents aren't available to help because grandparents are still working full-time because they can't afford to retire.
January 14, 2026 at 7:44 PM
It can maybe work with specific sets of circumstances and personalities, but yeah, as one of four, married to one of five, agreed.
January 14, 2026 at 7:40 PM
Yeah, "the older ones will raise the younger ones" can really mess up the older kids, and we know that now.

I'm gonna say this with all the kindness in my heart: you aren't going to survive if you don't let your life have room for other things.

This is not a short term fight where we can just go 24/7 and then it will be over. We've got YEARS ahead of us. Take a break. Hydrate. Go bake something. Breathe.
January 14, 2026 at 5:46 PM
yeah I'm still thinking about people who shame parents for taking the bins out while their kids are sleeping because "something could happen to them"

Very few people could raise a large family under that kind of pressure.
We expect more out of parents than we did 200, 100, or even 50 years ago (which is good!). Both parents are expected to be emotionally engaged with all of their children and actively participating in their lives. My taciturn, emotionally locked-down grandpa couldn't have raised 6+ kids that way.

Like king midas. Except everything I touch turns to typo. 💀

This sort of thing drives me bonkers.

Women had two major roles: domestic and ceremonial. Oh, and also manufacturing a product that was a load-bearing part of the region's economy, which is totally not a third important thing because it's a fiber and therefore definitionally domestic.

"transgender ideology" doesn't turn kids transgender. The unicorn in human form crying out "I can feel this body dying all around me!" in the Rankin-Bass animated adaptation of THE LAST UNICORN turns kids transgender. know the difference.

We had all these things. Including the very generous government baby bonuses.

The government supports made it possible to have the # of kids we wanted, when we wanted, without going into debt.

There is absolutely no amount of money/support they could give us that would make us have a third kid.
leftist plan to increase the birthrate:

- universal health care
- free child care
- better paid family leave
- better workforce protections so they can't lay you off while you're pregnant and be like "no it was for something else i swear"

ok i did it

As birthrates tumble, some progressives say the left needs to offer ideas and solutions
The US and other countries face aging, shrinking populations. Conservatives have shaped debate over the issue. Some liberals say it's time for progressives to weigh in.
