I would like to underscore this part: "People are in the streets in greater numbers than the first Trump term." Elite pundits and opinion are extremely resistant to this fact and it has trickled down to regular people. But it is demonstrably TRUE. Ask why they are so resistant? Who does it serve?
People are in the streets in greater numbers than the first Trump term and party ID is shifting more significantly, and yet the Democratic Party has been considerably more accommodationist
New party identification polling from Gallup this week shows Americans are moving against Trump faster than they did in his first term. Adults were R+4 in 2024, now D+8. That 12-pt drop is 3x the change in the first year of his first term.

A family from South Carolina brought their measles infections to airports, ferries and various locations in Washington state.

The health department says that they didn’t know they had measles.

But this is why unvaccinated people are a danger to communities, not just themselves.

The Insurrection Act is not "martial law." It doesn't displace civilian law, it doesn't suspend habeas corpus, it doesn't alter or suspend state and local government, and it doesn't make anything newly illegal. It allows using the military to enforce existing law, it doesn't change what the law is.

I called my parents sobbing (and we were in a tiff because they felt like our nanny was out too much and they were watching him too much) and my dad came over so I could cry more (he is a softer touch than my mom) and get a break (I went to a meeting).

Fuck that guy. I remember taking my child to the park when he was about 18 months when our nanny was out. One of the other nannies said something rude about her to me and then said "and that's why your child is like this." He was behaving like a normal 18 month old. I went home immediately and cried

You would have thought it was Kissinger, but having the actual physical Nobel Peace Prize publicly bartered in exchange for a literal international war is the point at which we can say whatever Alfred Nobel had in mind has run its course and then some, time to pull the plug.

I can't believe we are being forced to live through these times led by a man who has somehow remained in charge of this party in spite of the fact that the only American people he listens to are his imaginary friends who mostly vote for Trump.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been writing this story as often as I can without it feeling repetitive. This is an excellent thread, as all of Jamelle’s threads on this general topic today have been, and I hope folks are really taking this in.
There are places where Trump, as president, has broad freedom of action. And there are places where Trump, as president, has been able to act unilaterally because the main point of opposition, Congress (and SCOTUS), support his program. (1/?)

The reason I think it is important to say this is that it helps us focus on the likely risks.

It is, to me, very unlikely that a state will simply choose not to hold elections.

It is also, to me, very likely that voter intimidation and suppression will increase beyond the current terrible method.
Your regular reminder that there is no legal path from martial law to suspending elections in this country.

That doesn't mean there is no path. It just means that we need to reject the framing that the federal government has any legal authority to cease elections.

This seems like a maliciously put headline to make people feel a certain way.

Wikipedia is not partaking in generative AI. They are making AI companies and scrappers having to pay for training their modules off wikipedia texts. And having an AI (not that ai) tasked with updating dead links.
