All fine - every Chancellor says this.

But won't move the dial when PM/HomeSec tell migrant workers and foreign students their presence is a "squalid chapter" & are changing rules so as to kick them out.

HMT understands damage of current trajectory but needs to act, and soon.

Some people still don’t understand why we were SO ANGRY about Brexit (still are) but Carney’s speech explains it perfectly. Of course the delusional morons will reject the notion that the UK is a middle power, denying the reality that is so obvious to the rest of the country and the world.

Good stuff indeed, however just to note that Carney is describing exactly what the European Union is
and why it is.

Mark Carney is a fantastic demonstration of why having a coherent political and economic worldview is so important for a politician.

When you encounter something out of the scope of what you’ve previously experienced, you can derive your approach from first principles.

Labour: take notes.

Carney reportedly wrote the speech himself. Canada's govt is in good hands. He urges everyone to recognize that the US has joined Ru in finishing off the intl order and is trying to convert allies into vassals but also to remember Canada/EU/others have the power to push back and defend sovereignty.
Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

Amazing moment on French TV. A French judge explains how Trump sent people from the US Embassy basically trying to intimidate her during Le Pen's trial for embezzlement - something they've done to other judges around the world.

Here's California Governor Gavin Newsom in Davos – telling both Democratic leaders in Washington and world leaders in Europe to stop making themselves look stupid by letting Trump play them. It's hard to argue with anything he says here!

I’m still amazed to hear colleagues talk about this assuming US institutions will save the day. Outside my Bluesky bubble I think there is a lot of complacency & residual trust in American democracy (especially I’m afraid to say among my East European colleagues). “Oh Congress will stop him.” Nuh-uh

Donald J. Trump has driven this nation to the precipice. This is not a normal political disagreement. It is a constitutional emergency.

This is exactly why Farage is running scared of the TV studios this morning.
He didn’t apologise for his racism. Because he’s racist.
He can’t talk about Trump.
Because he supports him.
Against us.
He’s a miserable rat.

Beware!

You may have seen posts about Ukraine sharing fake strategic information to the US and this information being subsequently used by Russia

- LCI is a highly credible source (it is TF1's news channel)
- But no such claim has been made during the segment when they were supposed to be made
Confirmed that LCI highly credible & no such claim. The story is mainly about France replacing U.S. in providing intelligence support to Ukraine and what are France’s capabilities. If they had proof that US relays intelligence to Russia that would be the story.

The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.

Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than “quixotic” for Trump’s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.
But Americans who want to save the alliance with Europe must have no illusions about how bad a condition this transatlantic partnership is in.
