They continue to eviscerate the public health machinery that has quietly kept Americans, and others around the world, safe and healthy for decades.
The staff of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the journal that reports on health trends and emerging infectious threats, was also laid off. The publication’s storied history includes a June 1981 report that five previously healthy gay men were treated for an unusual pneumonia — the first hint of the AIDS epidemic. Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — the so-called “disease detectives” who respond to outbreaks around the globe — received layoff notices, according to a person familiar with them. The service was spared during an earlier round of layoffs in February.

this really is 80% of what they’re mad about, though. young people with progressive politics and funky queer-coded aesthetics - and in particular, young women who are opting out of heterosexual expectations.

What I'm asking archaeologist to do here is meet with a group of students who are 9 times out of 10 working on a robotics club project through First Lego League. These students will ask you a bunch of questions on a video chat, usually after school or during their lunch break. It's fun!

I'm doing another print run of these "Biology is Bigger than Binaries" shirts!

Back, quite literally, by popular demand. Bullying works, sure, but so does a bunch of nice cutie patooties politely asking!

Order 'em now, I'll mail 'em in early November.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

This was a point of conflict for so many years between my East Coast ass and my Midwesterner husband. He thought the interruption was rude but I was like, I'm adding to what you're saying! And he just kept feeling disrespected, too bothered to enjoy to my enthusiastic engagement.

The politeness question also asks us to infer that the interrupter either doesn’t care what the speaker has to say or assumes they know what the speaker will say, but I find that more often than not, it actually indicates excitement or passion or deep curiosity about the topic being discussed.

Still, the insistence that interrupting is always impolite doesn’t leave room for the nuances of banter, cadence, or the tendency of some people to monologue until they’re interrupted because they can’t break the chain of their own thought and need the conversation partner to do so.

It is absolutely white supremacy that treats cooperative overlap as "wrong" or a threat while treating hostile, enforced silence as expected norm during a conversation — especially between friends or loved ones! So *many* of our cultures, and neuroatypical interactions, rely on overlap as support.

I was speculating about custom freemotion quilting, ruler work, etc., not panto. Outlining each plate right inside the edge would be the most secure way of attaching them at the quilting stage.
shouldhavezagged.com
I'd probably fully secure them to the top before quilting (due to my own limitations) by gluing them down with Elmer's under the edges and straight/decorative stitching. If one were to rely on quilting only—which is valid!—they'd have to catch every edge pretty closely.

Was wondering why the latest @yourewrongabout.bsky.social episode sounded familiar. It's because I heard the story on 'This Is Love' in August. I'll still listen to Blair tell Sarah about it!
