The vet gave him some pain meds and fluids and he ended up making some poo last night and he's been eating lots all day today :)

When they're in pain they don't loaf like this or purr. They'll usually sit in weird positions, constantly shift, not allow you to pet them or become agitated when you try, or they'll grind their teeth in a loud, grating fashion. That's not an exhaustive list but it's a few common ways to tell.
