People praise Ukrainians’ resilience as they party in snowy yards beneath freezing high-rise buildings. Obviously, people are doing their best to keep morale up and not go insane, but nobody should have to live like this. Those people should be comfortable in their warm homes.

Whelp, I was already making a video essay on it and was going to release it tomorrow, but because Stephen Miller had to open his fascist mouth about Star Trek, I added to it and released it today. So enjoy me clowning on conservative assholes terrible Star Trek opinions - youtu.be/3HOzBtDUlbo

Saw a lot of headlines saying "wikipedia is embracing ai" being tossed around tabloids, and I'm pretty sure they were maliciously written to make you feel a certain way about Wikipedia. What's actually happening is that wikipedia is demanding payment for data scraping and the corpos don't like that.
Sure. AI companies have ALWAYS been training their models on Wikipedia content, which under the free and open access model is available to anyone — including AI companies. Agreements like these require AI companies to limit and offset the strain they place on Wikimedia infrastructure.

think of all the cool art we’re missing out on because creators are constantly fighting to survive economically, fighting against corporations trying to automate creation, battling online trolls, nagging to get paid for work completed, learning to be being social media marketers, learning to be publ

I want to cosign & underline this. Art takes effort. Even the worst art you've ever seen. There's a pretty high floor: a minimum amount of effort it takes to end up with a finished result. Every work of art is a testament to someone's passion to see it through.

Aaaaaand, guess what AI gets rid of.
What I hate most about gen Ai is how it takes away the effort. When I saw art before, I knew that even if it shitty and bad, i could tell that there was someone who worked hard to make it happen. It’s why shit like The Room got popular, because you could see the earnest effort on display.

I'm very very good at watercolour, which is difficult medium to master, and my colour game is on point.
Artists, I think we're all too comfortable sharing our imposter syndrome.

I would love to see you step out of your comfort zone and confidently state what you think you're actually really good at.

No self deprecation, just what you think you're the strongest at

Is anyone brave eniough? 👀

There’s just no subtlety or smarts to transphobic thought and its a mistake to assign it any. Its a very base and banal thing. Just the manifestation of belief in the base structures of patriarchal heterosexual society and that people should know their place in it

one of the things a lot of technocrats don't get about Star Trek is that the future of Star Trek?

it can be *right now*

we don't need spaceships, we don't need replicators, we just need a society that is built for humans and not...um...

Technocrats
He does not want Star Trek. He wants to co-opt the aesthetic of Star Trek to sell his techno-feudalist futurist wet dream. Star Trek hates men like him.
"We want to make Star Trek real," said Elon Musk.

"We want to make Starfleet Academy real so that it's not always science fiction, but one day the science fiction turns to science fact."

This! If Musk or Bezos or Altman or Bill Gates truly wanted to make Star Trek real, they could do it right now by spending all their wealth to help dismantle this capitalist colonial system.

I totally support people not wanting to give Paramount money and won't watch Starfleet Academy. But when talking about it, remember, Academy was mostly made before the Skydance merger & the creatives on the show don't necessarily support David Ellison but can't speak out about it due to their jobs.

If you are anxious and sad about the state of the world, that's fine, and there are plenty of strategies for dealing with that. But I think you already know that drive-by online dooming isn't a strategy. It's selfish and adolescent. It's a contagion that only spreads the worst of you, not the best.

Dictionary of the Oldest Written Language–It Took 90 Years to Complete, and It’s Now Free Online
It took 90 years to complete. But, in 2011, scholars at the University of Chicago finally published a 21-volume dictionary of Akkadian, the language used in ancient Mesopotamia.

To be honest, I actually struggle a lot with this episode these days. Not that it isn't a masterpiece, or that Visitor and Yulin aren't giving astonishing performances. But it starts a trend where it feels like the onus of reconciliation is put on the Bajorans rather than the Cardassians. (long 🧵>>)
