New on the blog - bagels, bikes and brews at Workhorse in Canton. I’ve got a hell of a lot of time for a good homemade bagel but there are barely any available in #Cardiff.

Deep and crisp and even.

Saved the best until last. Pettigrew Bakeries' mince pies; filled generously, balanced spicing & short pastry holding the whole together while you eat.

Heed the message.

- Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

It's just prescient, and eerie, how this fits what's happening right now.

The tree's up...

The Christmas menu's planned...
Some of the presents are bought, and some of them are even wrapped...

But there's one problem - what to get for the food lover in your life.

A pair of slippers won't cut it.

Don't despair, 1861 is here!

Confabulated AI citations now appearing in Google Scholar. Time to limit the number of references in academic papers?
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

The story here shouldn't even be "AI" - the story is that it now comes to light for everyone to see how incredibly sloppy many (not all etc.) scholars are working. Many apparently don't check the sources they cite although this is one of the fundamental prerequisites for serious scholarship.
