Me: no, it’s a do-or-do-not-corder. There is no try.
I really, really need to read these.
197. In case you didn’t know, Alan Moore wrote some Star Wars comics in the 80s for a UK Star Wars magazine. It is clear from the content that he was not entirely sure what Star Wars is supposed to be. They’re awesome.

TSR's Random House contract was a bit more complicated than that. But @benriggs.bsky.social book Slaying the Dragon is quite a read.
Have we done return horror stories recently?

IIRC Spider Robinson once asserted that a store ordered in a ton of his books for a signing, and when most of them didn't sell, sent enough back to measurably affect his sold to return ratio.

A million dollar return helped kill TSR.

(con't)
The publisher pays you based on what bookstores (not customers) buy, BUT they hold back a chunk because bookstores can return books later for a full refund, and how many returns you will get can be hard to predict. 8/

Society is a construct. You can just ask someone to do a ska cover of Faith of the Heart and they'll say "$300 please" and you give it to them and then you have it.

Everyone, give

I wonder what the breakdown of the proportion of Patreon, Substack, and Medium messages that are "that was interesting", "maybe the next one", and "why did I subscribe to this jackass?"

Thankfully, unsub options tend to be very convenient.

The Haslab stuff is just wild. This just seems a bit greedy. Five action figures and two light cycles for $240? How much was Jabba’s party barge?
"After a little over six weeks of availability, the “Tron: Heroes of the Grid” set failed to reach the minimum number of backers to go into production. It’s dead."
"The Tron set was released as a “Haslab” project, a special section of Hasbro for more ambitious, expensive projects."

Sorry, Syd Mead.

I hate how perfect bound books and adventures can't be scanned on a standard bookshelf. Makes it harder to find the one you want and makes the bookself look messy.

So I make these boxed sets for my loose RPG stuff. Each holds 3 inches of 8.5x11 books (I make the labels myself).

I... I was lied to!
* You know how Van Halen had a contract rider demanding bowls of M&Ms with the brown ones removed?

They later claimed that was all a test to make sure venues were reading their contracts. Clever!

BUT WAIT, that claim itself is actually false. I fact-checked it.

The Star Wars talk reminds me that the Epic collection of the Marvel books is OOP and people are asking three digits for a reasonably well done reprint, which just fills me with rage. This should be an evergreen product!

With all the talk and fighting over “recommended reading/watch orders” and pressure to consume media in very prescribed ways, I feel we’ve lost a chaotic shared fandom experience and nerd conversation topic.

So, what series did you encounter out of order? Or in the weirdest possible order?
