Sometimes if I accidentally type a period instead of a space, bluesky thinks it’s a URL and creates a preview even if I go back and fix the typo.

I’ll do it here… yup, fake link stays even after I fix the space. Gotta manually delete it to go away.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

let's bring back proper TV writers' rooms and pack 'em full of playwrights because if I've learned anything from IWTV it's that that is where the magic happens

October Spooky Reads: What Stalks the Deep by @tkingfisher.com

The latest Alex Easton book sees the sworn soldier arriving in the US to help out an old friend, but frankly nothing is what it seems.

This is the most Ursula of books: creepy, gross, horrifyingly pragmatic. A+ plotting and dialog

Dear techbros frantically nutting at each other over your own god-like brilliance for making the Five-Boobed-Lady-Picture-Machine: I would at this point settle for you applying your alleged technical genius to making a printer that works

This is true and they are super endangered by poachers who shovel them up by the hundreds and sell them at flea markets and shit. You should not buy the plants and if you happen to kick the poacher in the shins on accident, no one will hear about it from me.

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina
map illustrating the native range of Venus Flytrap plants, just a little half circle around coastal North and South Carolina in USA

Loved @freyamarske.bsky.social 's new novel, Cinder House. It's a beautifully written and unique retelling of Cinderella, fit for October. Six stars out of five.

Blessed are the frogs, for they keep making authoritarians look incredibly stupid

The Catholic Church requires bishops to submit their resignation to the Pope when they turn 75 and the Pope chooses whether to accept it or not and as much as I hate having to hand anything to the Catholic Church, they are kinda on to something

Janet Mills's campaign account just posted this video of her saying that she just announced her campaign against Susan Collins. #MESen. Mills, 77, is expected to jump in the race against Collins. She would face Graham Platner, Jordan Wood and Dan Kleban.

This whole thread!!! when I talk about YA authors getting picked up to write romantasy, it's overwhelmingly white authors writing het romance. but that represents just a fraction of what's actually happening in the YA space.
bookjockeyalex.bsky.social
There are real conversations to be had about thematic issues with romantasy, what publishers are buying vs what they're rejecting, YA being colonized by NA, etc. But what ends up getting the most marketing, into celebrity book clubs, and on bestsellers lists isn't representative of the whole genre.

to understand what's happening in romantasy, and how pubilshers make decisions about what stories to tell, it's in fact deeply necessary to know how diverse YA fantasy actually is. because that's how it becomes really clear the extent to which romantasy publishers are prioritizing straight whiteness

Their eyes are holographic and look like they’re shining. hand holding a heart shaped white sticker that says “I ❤️ kelp” and kelp fills out the negative space in the heart shape.

Little Free Anti-ICE Libraries: yesterday multiple people were abducted by ICE in my Chicago neighborhood (Avondale). This morning I added 40 ICE alert whistles to three different LFLs, including one box that is about a block from one of the kidnappings. I have ordered 700 whistles.
Bright orange individually packaged whistles, stapled to English and Spanish literature designed by Pilson Arts Community House in Chicago. They are placed inside a little free library in my neighborhood: Avondale in Chicago.
