Hey blues!
I put some words together and the people at GrandOldTeam have been kind enough to publish them.

So - have John Finnemore and J D Vance ever been seen in the same room?

Was Patsy Straightwoman the ghostwriter for Hillbilly Elegy?

Fascinating article this.
Gives an insider's view for one.

But also goes a little way to answering a question I have often pondered. Do the main movers in our media and politics actually believe what they say?

Less a coup, perhaps, more a witch hunt by true believers Gibb and cronies.
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

I think there are real problems with BBC News.
Not the ones being aired today.
But those arising from
* decades of govt / right wing attacks
* existing in a right wing media environment
* over-reliance on privately educated employees

But as someone who has spent a lot of time abroad

If you don’t like the BBC, I suggest that you go to America and watch their TV for a day. It gives you a migraine. The BBC also keeps the standards of the other outlets relatively high. If you think we watch shit now, imagine it with no BBC. And they actually care about drama, children’s, factual.

A little antidote to Monday morning for anyone who needs it.

I use Bluesky for news and opinion but I try to balance that out with positive content away from the news - and Robin’s shots of Liverpool never fail to lift my mood.

Some sensible, hype free thoughts in this article about how work might change as AI develops and proliferates...

"anyone who’s talking about AI becoming a god or a monster is almost certainly an idiot"

Fantastic thread of posters for films from a universe just a little over that way... 😀
🧵I've posted them before, but here's my thread of horror/kids' TV double-bill cinema posters. Happy Halloween...

A simple first step: No more vox pops in deserted midday high streets when the only people likely to have the time or inclination to speak to a camera crew are wholly untypical. Pensioners, in other words.

Focus groups get a bad rep but I have never once run one during normal working hours.
Broadcasters - especially the BBC - have been working hard to ensure they give a voice to the 25-35% of people willing to vote Reform (and harder groups within that, like anti-asylum protest and Tommy protest)

Need to pay as much attention to the unheard majority who fear that form of politics

Above all, the police approach in that decade culminated in the unlawful killing of 96 people and decades of cover-up.
Jenrick casting 1980s British football hooliganism as something that was easily dealt with by police and not an era defining issue which we're still living with the consequences of today... He's genuinely the most unserious person in British politics rn

Indeed, this sort of thing happens so often that I am beginning to suspect that the arc of the universe does not bend towards my residential joy.
It was very disappointing to wake up and discover that I did not have a nice luxury flat with Denise Gough as my landlady

This is a cracking article about one of the few grounds to really deserve that overused label, 'iconic'.

Heseltine.
Dyed in the wool, old school Tory.

But he was granted the freedom of the City of Liverpool for good reason.

He can read a phrase like 'managed decline' or 'illegal immigrants' and see through them to the impact and human cost of how they are used - and misused.
“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

Have to agree with other replies.

This is so exquisitely crafted it tips over into art.... 😀
Gavin has shown himself unfit to be President. This is why we should let our current President take a third term, despite his age. Who cares what the constitution says.

And works very nicely on my budget Android.
Nobody asked for it. We did it anyway.

If you ever used Winamp during the later years, it had an awesome, awesome visualizer called Milkdrop. The Webamp people implemented a workalike called Butterchurn.

Internet Archive now supports Webamp and Butterchurn. Just click on the llama!
