I think it's important not to misunderstand what these social media platforms are. They are not public arenas where we bravely take on reactionary forces in honorable combat. They are apps that expose you to stress and thereby simulate the feeling of having done something useful

How did Ray Bradbury write Fahrenheit 451 in 1953?! It’s more relevant than ever. Glued to screens, wanting to “feel” intelligent without trying, dopamine hits, anxiety to return to scrolling, it nails so many things! Scarily good #booksky

What an obsequious, toadying, servile, brown-nosing, corrupt little cunt Gianni Infantino is.

The FIFA 'peace prize' is the most cringe-worthy, pathetic thing I've ever seen in my life.

Football deserves better than this travesty of a ceremony and ruling body.

Just finished Dispatch. So fun, incredible voice acting, and made me really feel a connection with the group. Loved the office banter and the general team bonding they all go through. Can’t wait for more!

Just finished Billy Summers by Stephen King. Great spin on a known trope / familiar story. Loved reading Billy writing about himself, and also the flow state he achieved being described, plus Alice’s realization about the power of writing and how one can use it to “control” outcomes.

This thread, damn.

“this is not dunking on kids. We are seeing this at all levels--even grad students. AI + social media has had a profound impact on how we think and process our world, and we can't stop to reflect on it, because billionaires keep hurling addictive tech at us.”
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

I post annoyingly on AI for the same reason I’ve spent over a decade yelling about sports analytics.

There are often good, smart, relevant critiques to be made (some which even may invalidate large swathes of the field) and it’s always the dummies yelling the dumbest things standing in opposition.

People who "create" AI slop should be forced to consume only AI slop and not be allowed to watch, read or listen to anything made by a human. Let them wallow in the cesspit of their creation.
