THREAD: 404 Media has been covering ICE and the technology they've been using to surveil and raid "targets", detain people based on a flawed facial recognition app, and lie about violence on the streets.

They have established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.
DHS Is Lying To You About ICE Shooting a Woman
At least four videos show what really happened when ICE shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday. DHS has established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

Perhaps one should not discuss breaking laws on a 100% public social media website that we know the federal government is aware of and monitoring.

If this is true (and that’s not a small if), it is reasonable to posit that Bezos is trying to offload the Post. Or kill it altogether.

Sports is a top driver of traffic and subscriptions for most news sites.

And we’ve seen how Bezos and Lewis have mangled the Opinion section.

Map of Utilities outages in Russia for the week 19th to the 25th of January. This is by far the worst week I've tracked and one with highest number of long term outages disrupting life. I would point to Murmansk where they're even out of bread in places.

Welcome to a new daily Ukraine thread, documenting the country's fight against Russian tyranny.

Day 1432 is Burns' Night, so it seems apt to begin with a quote from the Scottish Bard:

Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

One of the theologians I read a lot recently did a long essay on how doing a big Bonhoffer project helped him realize that MAGA evangelicals have kind of already gone through the process that made the German people see potential mass murder as sanctifying! Once you see it, it's hard to unsee
The MAGA guys on X who defend the executions of Renee Good and Alex Pretti would do that with mass murder on a scale you can’t even imagine. They are beyond reason or empathy. Completely brain poisoned, tribal fiends.

I read the explanation of the penguin meme. It’s about a penguin intentionally breaking off from his tribe and walking towards certain death. I still don’t understand the Trump/ penguin meme.

Let me guess: The penguin is a device to amplify engagement by making people fill the comments with corrections...?
Or are they actually suggesting a pivot to the ultimate deep south?
