How do you define angst?

more often then not ill open or read a fic and its tagged no or little angst, and yet I'm still getting hit with hard conversations and conflict and heavy feelings. So maybe my understanding of "angst" is wrong and i need to adjust my expectations?

It's after midnight, so chucking my rwylm WIPWednesday up here before I head to bed--Ed is remembering just how annoying life in a small town can be

This chapter is going to be a looong boi, so I think it'll be end of the weekend at the earliest. I'll try to post an ETA when I have a better idea!
And then Annie peered over her shoulder. “Well, well. Is that Stede Bonnet I see?” “Hello, Annie!” Stede told her, careful and cordial. Annie had always scared him a bit—a fact that she knew, and delighted in. “A pleasure to see you again, it’s been far too long.” “Seventeen years,” she agreed, all innocence. “Awful lot of time to miss someone.” “Behave,” Ed muttered under his breath. She pretended not to hear him. “Sooo,” Annie drawled, her poison sweetheart mouth pursed playfully, “I heard a little rumor that you two have been spending a lot of time together lately. Been canoodling all over town, haven’t you?” God, Mum’s treachery truly knew no bounds. Annie had always been another one of her little adoptees, ever since high school—her own parents being either sloppy drunk assholes who refused to get the divorce they desperately needed or entirely absent, with nothing in between. Ed was positive she and Mum still met up for coffee sometimes. Probably even texted. “Well you heard wrong,” Stede said firmly. “We’re not together. Or canoodling, for that matter.” But that only made Annie’s eyes gleam brighter with the shine of bloodlust. “Oh?” She stroked a hand down Stede’s arm, lashes fluttering. “So does that mean you’re finally available then, gorgeous?” She slanted a look Ed’s way, doe-eyed and devilish. He scowled back at her. Stede, for his part, looked about ready to bolt into the woods, never to be seen again. “Afraid I’m nowhere near man enough for you,” he told Anne politely. “Think I’ll just, ah-” he pointed towards the far wall, a haphazard display of candelabras and other miscellaneous decor. “Pretty sure I spotted a [SOME KIND OF ANTIQUE] over yonder.” Tossing a perplexed glance at Ed, he scurried off in that direction. Annie watched him go, a wolfish cant to her head. ED AND ANNIE END UP TRAILING AFTER HIM AS HE EXPLORES THE STORE. ED’S WATCHING HIM FONDLY AS HE EXCLAIMS OVER VARIOUS ANTIQUES. IT FEELS VERY FAMILIAR. He noticed Annie staring at him then, her expression smug. “I guess some things never change, hm Eddie?” Ed busied himself looking at ANTIQUE THING. “No idea what you’re on about.” “Mm-hm,” she said tartly. ED! STEDE EXCLAIMS FROM OVER BY A DISPLAY. LOOK! THIS TEA SET WILL PLAY OFF THE FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS BEAUTIFULLY! ED CRANED HIS NECK, PEERING AT WHATEVER STEDE HELD ALOFT IN HIS HANDS. SICK FIND, BRO “Oh, Stede sweetheart?” Annie called out suddenly, a suspicious amount of sugar in her tone. “I’ve been meaning to move that table there—the gold one—but it’s awfully heavy. Don’t suppose you’d be a doll? “Certainly!” Stede looked at the table a moment, considering. It was quite a low table, but bulky. He squatted down so he could lift with his back. Be still Ed’s heart. And dick, actually. Jesus. Ed could feel his own pupils dilating as he watched the flex of Stede’s calves, his thighs, his arms. “Where do you want it?” Stede asked, hefting in the thing in his arms. Only a little breathless. “Oh, you can put it anywhere you like,” Annie purred and Ed was torn between strangling her and shouting out ditto! at the top of his lungs. The innuendo, of course, sailed straight over Stede’s head. He just frowned, quizzical, and readjusted his hold on the table. Annie laughed. “By the window is perfect, thanks love.” With a sunny, guileless smile, Stede trotted over to deposit his table in its intended spot. Annie watched him go with an altogether too wistful look on her face. Ed knew she was just playing, really. Fucking with him. He also knew she’d fuck Stede in a heartbeat if he said yes—Ho Code be damned. “You know,” she said thoughtfully, still watching Stede, “I thought you were mad back then, but I see it now. He certainly grew up, didn’t he?” “Don’t,” Ed ground out. “And you know, I seem to recall someone telling me once that he fucks like an animal.” Annie started after Stede, shooting Ed a grin over her shoulder—sparkly and full of mischief. “Can’t remember who it was, though. Any ideas?” Ed glared at her—again—but she only cackled and carried on, following in Stede’s wake.

Another sneaky #OFMD #WIPWednesday, for something which may or may not go somewhere, but that wouldn't let me go until I'd gotten it down. It was fun to write, if only to parlay one of my own Oblivious ZB moments into an experience for Stede.
Rather than taking his drink and disappearing back into the crowd, Ed leaned on the bar and asked, "Enjoying the gig?" He took a deep gulp of his beer, his dark brown eyes sincere. Stede mutely nodded in answer to the question, lost for words as he took in the full Ed look, so different to his own. Ed was wearing all black, a contrast to the crisp whites and beiges Stede was sporting. Boots and black jeans and a loose black tshirt that had some sort of pattern on it. Stede found himself squinting at it, feeling as if he should recognise the pattern, as if there was some sort of meaning to it, and flushed when Ed laughed at his obvious staring. "It's a magic eye kind of thing, mate," he explained, gesturing at it. "Not a picture, though, it's words. Let me know if you get it." "Oh, I don't mean to stare," Stede rushed out, guilt gripping him at being called out for his rudeness. "Stare away, mate. I don't mind. Kinda interested to see if you get it, to be honest." Ed winked, Stede wasn't sure why, but he'd given permission to stare and Stede loved a puzzle, so he finished off the remains of his whiskey and picked up the glass that Ed had bought him. He crouched down slightly, narrowing his eyes at the pattern, moving his head back, tilting it, unfocussing his eyes as he did. The pattern coalesced teasingly, almost coming into focus before slipping away from him again. He shook his head, deciding that perhaps it was better to try and sneak up on it, and that maybe he needed to wear his reading glasses. He was going to decode it, though, if it bloody killed him. He took another sip of his drink, about to ask Ed a question about the band, only to find that he'd turned his attention back to the stage, head bobbing, foot tapping, though his body was still angled towards Stede. There was a knowing smile on his face, practically daring Stede to fail at reading the tshirt. Right. Fine. Stede Bonnet was not one to back down from a challenge. He set down his drink, and pulled his reading glasses from the top pocket of his waistcoat. After he'd put them on he concentrated again, focussing and unfocussing his eyes, and all of a sudden the words swam into focus. "If... You...Can't... Read.…..This," he read out loud, squinting and not noticing the proud grin Ed was now sporting. "You...Masturbate...Too..Much." Stede felt a blush begin at his bloody toes, washing up through his body. His ears were ringing, as much from the ambient noise as from his usual response whenever anything sexual was mentioned. He didn't even masturbate that much! He found himself about to say that to Ed when Ed leaned over and asked, voice low but definitely audible over the band, "Help you out with that?" "Wow," Lucius breathed, as Stede wrapped up his offering to the 'gay awakening' conversation they'd been having over brunch. "That's a helluva gay awakening, being picked up by a hot man at a punk gig. Surprised you still got married to Mary after that." Mary, who was tucked up against her girlfriend Evelyn on the other side of the table, snorted in amusement, and Stede shot her a fondly venomous look. He took a fortifying sip of his mimosa before forcing himself to face Lucius. "You may find this difficult to believe, Lucius, but I was completely oblivious to it. It was only when I finally figured out that I wasn't straight that the memory came flooding back and a light went off. I realised, twenty years too bloody late, that he had been trying to pick me up. At the time I just said something like 'Thanks for the offer, but I don't need the help,' I believe. He finished his beer and went back to dancing and I went home."

“Have I mentioned that I’ve been hanging out with Stede? Your client?” Ellen shakes her head. “No, you haven’t. Though I’ve noticed you two are friendly in the waiting room.” Interesting. Ed likes that she notices that. He knows he’s still smiling like a fool, but fuck it. “Yeah. He came with me to the party.” “That sounds fun,” she tells him, folding her hands over her legal pad, voice suspiciously neutral. “What else have you two done together?” Ed’s about to run his mouth off about their coffee dates and his impromptu babysitting gig and their increasingly active text chain, but it strikes him that she probably already knows all that. “I dunno, we talk a lot these days. I probably see him once a week. Usually just for a quick bite.” “So the party was probably something rather new for your friendship,” she observes. “Well, sure. Yeah, we had a lot to drink and ended up crashing in the living room. Not something he does very often.” “Mmm,” she seems to agree. But the more Ed talks about Stede, the stranger it feels. “Why am I telling you this, anyway? You talk to him every week.” She nods, shifting slightly in her chair. “Yes, that’s true. But we’re here for you today. I’m more interested in what you think of this friendship…if that’s something you’d like to explore more?” He lifts an eyebrow, wondering if that’s a leading question. “Should I want to?” “You brought it up.” “I like it,” he admits without missing a beat. “I like him.” She finally offers an encouraging smile. “What about it?” Ed takes a breath, considering all the reasons that come to mind — he settles on the most basic truth of it. “We have a lot of fun together, you know? He’s just super easy to be around. But he’s also got so much going on, and I think he needs a friend. He’s been through so much, which I guess you probably know better than anyone…” He looks up, searching for any reaction to that, but Ellen keeps an even gaze as she listens. “Has he brought any of this up? About hanging out with me?” He finally asks, tired of trying to read her expressions. “Ed,” she lowers her voice, looking at him seriously. “I can’t discuss what I talk about with other patients.” “Well, yeah, I know,” he agrees quickly, throwing his palms up defensively. “But I’m not asking for his medication list or blood type or whatever the fuck.” “That’s not the point.”

TBH I kind of got rid of all my prints and commissions and things...Not that I'm unwilling to do them but like... prints are not really cost effective (from ko-fi) and well...I am reworking the commissions page but I kind of wonder if I should. Pricing is always difficult to figure out...
