I truly believe that motor vehicles have to be classified as deadly weapons. No more 'accidents'. List attention and drive without endangering anyone.

Doing that would completely change the culture around the driving.

We also need robust expansive public transit and alternatives to cars.
Yes. In addition to long-term street redesigns, we need to enforce traffic laws.

We currently have a culture that doesn’t consider road rules (like speed limits) to be legitimate or real.

Some jurisdictions — Ontario, Alberta — have banned/restricted automated speed enforcement. That’s bonkers.
Is enforcement the answer to a deadly year on Calgary roads?

This is a map showing every single population centre as defined Provincially, from Nain to Margaree.

The bars are proportional to each-other, with a cap of the 111750 being attributed to St. John's. The bottoms of each bar are the 'centre point' of the population cluster.

Every MP should be required to watch this video or they have to abstain from voting

Understanding how complex engineering projects get detailed, pun intended, should be the default level of understanding to vote on projects of this scale.

Also loved seeing Reece in Paige's video essay for CBC! 🤩
A new video from Paige Saunders on Canadian High Speed Rail landing on the day we announce the first phase from Ottawa to Montreal? This is amazing.

If our cities are shaped by stories, then great books form the foundation of knowledge and inspiration needed to build more liveable, inclusive and prosperous places.

These are 24 titles we read this year that informed our approach to changing hearts, minds and streets. An #UrbanismBookClub thread.

ICYMI: Last week I made a video about why Halifax's decade (or century) of population growth haven't translated into an easier time balancing the books.

Hey. Hi. Hello.

In this Halloween Special , I continue HFX By Bike's annual tradition of trying to genuinely scare you using nothing but spreadsheets and graphs.

This year it's all about the city's taxes and why it feels like Halifax can never get ahead.

Montreal is the best city in Canada IMO. I'm hoping their election doesn't revert the city back to something like Toronto or *shudders* Halifax or St. John's.
A quick explainer on Montreal’s election:

The urbanist Projet Montréal party of outgoing mayor Valérie Plante has lost the election to the opposition Ensemble Montréal.

Projet deserves a *lot* of credit for Montreal’s transformation in the past 10 or 15 years to be more bike/pedestrian-friendly.

Those are quite the #WorldSeries parking prices!

1. It’s good that its expensive. Pricing is a really important public policy lever.

2. It’s REALLY good that the price is much higher for “oversized vehicles” [they certainly are]. Again, pricing is a really important public policy lever.

Heavy rain is looking VERY likely over the Avalon and possibly the Burin Peninsulas from late Thursday into Saturday. Computer guidance, as of late Wednesday evening, suggests there is a 90 to 100% chance that most of this area sees more than 25 mm of rain. Details to follow! #nlwx

Average new-vehicle manufacturer’s suggested retail prices hit an all-time high last month, reaching $52k, up 4.2% from last year.

(The best selling vehicle in the U.S. is a ford truck that sells for more than 65k)

All that “freedom” to be stuck in car dependency & traffic sure sounds expensive.

I don’t hate cars. Like most North American males I was raised to think cars are cool, and as a design nerd, few objects are more eye-catching.

I hate surrendering our streets, our cities and our lives to them.

Car dependence isn’t freedom.

While we were in Italy my wife kept remarking on all the small vehicles, both personal and commercial. One thing I stressed was that it's not that people in Italy necessarily like or want small cars, but rather smaller vehicles are the result of a deliberate set of policy and design choices.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople

You’re much closer to becoming disabled or homeless than you are to becoming rich and wealthy.

It’s not a moral failing. It’s not something you can “try harder” your way out of.

We need robust social supports & safety nets to ensure everyone is properly cared for.

Almost every developer I work with does not like building suburban houses. It's a long ROI thus, they're not great for business. We all feel the housing affordability crisis.

But for some reason, many municipalities refuse to change their ways to allow smaller, safer streets and affordable housing
Just as I have to step away from today’s Council meeting, a DEVELOPER comes on to literally school Andy Fillmore on how there’s no future growth possible in Halifax that doesn’t include both rapid transit and BIKE LANES!
