I would also argue that if you want to expand your horizons, doing so on your own terms is more likely to result in you being able to listen carefully and compassionately than if you are constantly bombarded by positions you find objectionable.

It's telling that Vance's first instinct following the Politico leak was to tell his sons to be wary of what they write in group chats--to assume “some scumbag is going to leak it in an effort to try to cause you harm.”

His message here is basically--be racist; just don't get caught.
Vance said he planned to warn his children—“especially my boys”—to be cautious about what they share in group chats or online, advising them to assume “some scumbag is going to leak it in an effort to try to cause you harm or cause your family harm.”
