Just because it's being passed around a lot: NO, data centers in space do NOT benefit from space being cold. Space is cold in the formal sense we use to define temperature. But it is very bad at cooling. What would you rather have to cool hot metal: a lukewarm water tub or a giant cold atmosphere?

Australian data centre development really is massive and globally significant - I knew this but didn't know it was #2 in the whole world in terms of $$? Wild! But it makes sense!

HEY FRIENDS!! Did you know that Australia - #2 in the world for data centre investment - is now formally missing its climate targets thanks in large part to the resulting surge in power demand?

It's massive news - @crikey.com.au let me NERD OUT to explain why:

These deadly triple zero failures are the result of the stupid ideological push to privatize essential services by Labor & Coalition governments in the 1990s and 2000s.

UK Labor is re-nationalizing trains.
The least the Albanese govt can do is ensure emergency comms are in public hands. #auspol

I hate these fucking ChatGPT commercials that show it helping folks like planning a date that seems "chill," or how to become a "morning person," all things that should've been learned from a community not a goddamned spicy autocorrect.

Fuck all that noise.

a gentle reminder that wind farms are the best
Despite what you hear from fossil fuel-funded politicians, the U.K has just generated a record amount of clean, domestic wind energy.

Enough to power 23 million homes!

U.K decarbonisation policy is a recipe for energy security.

It is so striking to see the disclaimer "AI can make mistakes. Check outputs before using" on every single piece of software. Imagine the equivalent warning label on the Ford Pinto. "The fuel tank ruptures and bursts into deadly flames when crashed. Do not crash the Ford Pinto while driving"
I will be teaching about Ford Pinto case in my sociology of law lecture tomorrow on the risk society & collective harms. It is clear that the development of (gen) #AI fits in same capitalist & risk logic but big difference is that this type of corporate behaviour has become normalised and accepted

Every facet of generative AI has made my professional life worse, without question, but THIS specific aspect has been driving me NUTS.

Clients, who have made me toil for weeks over indescribably small details, are now approving & producing in-house commercial artwork that looks like a fever dream.
I feel the clients now using GenAI to do stuff and going "good enough" when they used to nitpick at every last detail is due to them finding out all those nit picky changes take time and work they cant be bothered to put in.

Anyone saying alkalization has health benefits is a murderous liar & a charlatan.

NEW: Rural health is in crisis. Congress created a $50B rescue package and gave states just weeks to compete for a slice of it.

$3.75B hinges on whether states pass a series of Trump-approved policies, including restrictions on SNAP.
