What is it with Aucklanders electing weird dudes called Brown as Mayor?

Hope everyone learnt their stupid damn lesson from this:

1. taking money from the crazy toxic people will get you billboards everywhere, but also cover you in their stink

2. giving toxic money to people stupid enough to take it just gets you the worst candidates money can buy

Only just. Special votes could see him out.

Am I reading this right? Not a single person from Independent Together/Bitter Wellington got elected? Apart from Chung, who looks like he poisoned the entire campaign for those right wing weirdos.

Bit on the nose for the Post to be quoting this given the sheer volume of responsibility they hold for the grossly toxic, racist and misogynistic environment surrounding Wellington local government.

"That must never be normalised, and every councillor, every single one of us, has a duty to call it out and shut it down. That’s how we build a council worthy of the people it serves."

I’m unimpressed that Calvert, Young and Chung are back on the council for Pōneke - looks like the bullshit will continue.

I will note that in today's Ōtepoti mayoral election the antivaxxer was outvoted by the vampire by almost 2 to 1

6) the same people who vote in this election every time clearly did so again this year and low turnout got them what they wanted.
7) 9 elected Act candidates is 9 too many
8) if the left don’t mobilise, next year is going to be a shitstorm
9) the whole local government system needs an overhaul:

The Olive green areas are councils where citizens voted down Māori wards (the little blue blob in the middle is Kirikiriroa, which voted by a whisker to retain theirs).
Coincidentally those Olive green areas also pretty accurately represent land confiscated by the crown after the Waikato wars.

Ok after an afternoon of results, texts, calls, messages on other apps and emails, I have some thoughts on today’s Local Election results

1) Voter turnout is depressing. 32%ish on average across AoNZ is pathetic.
2) The Māori Wards referendum should never have happened - it was a racebaiting farce…

And luckily, the mayor is a single vote. So despite what he was saying before the election, he can’t barge in and start making demands, because that’s not how the council works.

Speaking of central government… Andrew Little, who I didn’t vote for and don’t want as mayor, at least has the capacity to tell his former colleagues in central government to go fuck themselves. So silver lining despite him being the type who thinks we can’t have nice things.

This, along with a resounding vote to retain the Māori Ward at WCC and the Māori Constituency at the WRC, is great news. U fortunate Whanau and Baker didn’t get elected. I wish them both the best.

What we have is the most left wing WCC ever. An expected and strong rejection of central government.

The new Wellington City Council will include 5 Labour councillors and 4 Green councillors, plus Andrew Little, giving the two party "coalition" an increased governing majority - 10 out of 16 votes, compared to 8 under the previous council.

Māori ward retained. Rebecca Matthews elected. Paula Muollo not elected. This is pretty much all I was asking for, thank you Wellington.

8 out of 44 candidates is a fairly thorough rejection. just like 6% is.
