no one can bring what James Garner brought to the role

they hafta be charming like a conman, but also a believable beach bum, and a reluctant hero, a man who’s an ex-con and an army veteran.

closest you can get these days is Ryan Gosling, Sam Rockwell, or maybe a wild card like Method Man
Jim Rockford is back on the case: NBC has ordered a pilot for a reboot of the classic '70s detective series The Rockford Files.

Maybe the most fascinating belief among the billionaire class, especially the Silicon Valley set, has been their confidence that if they blow up the specific conditions and institutions that put them on top, they will certainly come out even higher on top
Congratulations to all the bankers, hedge-fund managers, private-equity honchos, tech titans, corporate executives and op-ed writers for backing the man who will do more to undermine the system that made them insanely wealthy than any other presidential candidate in their lifetimes.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the US central bank had been served grand jury subpoenas from the Justice Department threatening a criminal indictment, a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s attacks on the Fed.

Because America despises and refuses to listen to Black women. Those who voted for Trump — or chose to forgo voting for a presidential candidate — valued racism and misogyny over democracy. It's that simple.
It is impossible to overstate the degree to which the entire national political media's coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign, especially once Harris won the nomination, was deeply, fundamentally, shamefully unserious about the stakes & the candidates.
I can still recall all the tut-tutting from the media when Harris made this argument.

honestly wonder this every morning while reading the news:
when do we start calling this a civil war?

why should we care if billionaires threaten to leave our state? if you check the numbers, they typically don’t pay taxes anyway. seems like no big loss. hell, I’ll help them pack

am no Obama stan but I do hope he pops up to dunk on Trump about how pathetic it is that he’s willing to accept someone else’s slightly used Nobel Peace Prize just so he can be like Obama
unspeakably pathetic stuff from Trump here as he says he'd be honored to accept María Corina Machado's Nobel Prize if she wants to give it up to him

Weird to be commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Am Rev while living under a government that has a) sent armed troops to occupy cities perceived to be too rebellious, b) rendered largely irrelevant the representative branch of government, and c) claimed imperial right to rule other countries.

They're not benign, they're not neutral. These tech behemoths and their entitled broligarch stewards are not your little friends and news orgs have been screwing themselves for years by tying their distribution fortunes to these men and assumptions of algorithmic beneficence
Are tech companies allies or threats to press freedom?
In 2026, this will be the question that matters most to journalists.

Yeah, I am constantly torn between Blackness and patriotism because it is very hard to love a country that is built around hating me and mine, but I try to remember that a lot of the people who fought for this country to be better were my ancestors and I have no right to give up. We belong too.

As we grieve Good's murder, it is also worth reflecting on who she represented: ordinary citizens standing up to an increasingly oppressive state.

More bravery and dignity than scores of people in American media, government, or industry.
“Three years is a long time to resist and to endure with all our might. But it is not long enough for them to triumph, not the way they’re going. We’ve got this. It’s going to be hard, there will be more losses, but we will beat them in the end.” www.liberalcurrents.com/murder-in-mi...

Renee Nicole Good is the one whose reputation should be protected, whose death should be marked by flags across the country being lowered to half-staff, who should be getting tearful tributes and acknowledgments from politicians and media figures. These are the people we ought to honor.

Denny is completely correct here. I'll even go a step further and say that strictly from a craven political ambition standpoint, if you're the person who stands up to this murder and takes ICE to task and doesn't back down, you become the 2028 Dem frontrunner overnight. People yearn for a leader
There's just no choice. If the state backs down from this it is *over* over.

If you understand that the modern patriarchy really objects to women owning themselves every other policy makes sense.
The rise of deepfakes and AI CSAM prove public and private sectors don’t actually care about abuse, but still punish sex workers, queer people, and women under that guise. Credit cards companies and law enforcement punish consensual sex and sexuality, but ignore and therefore encourage abuse

went to the girls’ soccer team for high school to cheer them on and at one point they pulled off this epic goal, I jumped up as I cheered and I landed in a divot in the grass, my tibia slammed into my ankle and I broke it. so yeah, I broke my leg at a soccer game where I wasn’t even playing
What's the most ridiculous way you ever hurt yourself? I got out of the tub, skidded in water and tripped over the toilet. Ankle sprain.
