This is so delightful.
The National UFO Reporting Center has a database of 150,000 sightings with time and location along with speed, shape, size.

I had fun with this, which visualizes all of them; I was going for a “searching in a dark forest” type feeling but it ended up a bit UFO-like!

The leading cause of death by far among ICE officers is COVID-19.
How dangerous is it really to work for ICE?
According to ICE’s own data, none of its officers have been killed by an immigrant in the agency’s history.

I wanted to just share one story about a kid who spent a lot of time in the neighborhood where Renee Nicole Good died today. Prince got married at Park United Methodist just down the street from 34th & Plymouth; he went to high school at Central High a few blocks in the other direction over on 35th.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

It's almost Christmas. You're excited, and naturally curious!

Please resist the urge to hunt and peek for your gifts in advance. Your family want to see your natural reaction. And it ruins the surprise!

So reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) can't fly, but they are VERY MAGICAL.

For example, their EYES CHANGE COLOR during the year & they're one of the few large mammals that can see UV. Golden brown in summer, deep blue in winter.

Let's talk about the unique visual adaptations of Rudolph and company.

If you're not trans, I don't think I can fully explain how important this is.

It's so powerful that one of the most circulated science media publications in the world has come out and said "trans children are real and providing transition care improves their lives." That's groundbreaking.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

I've written a brand new book review!

The book is 'Land of thieves' by Janna Coomans (2025).
It's based on old criminal records from the middle ages, lots of little stories about common people.

Most history books are about kings, politicians, wars and the rulers and shakers who shaped the world of our ancestors.Luckily these days there’s a lot more attention for what life was really…

While searching for something else I stumbled upon this fascinating op-ed from Dec. 2015--ten years ago. It appeared in the Greenville, SC Index-Journal. It matter-of-factly pointed out that Trump was beloved by white nationalists like Jared Taylor. This was BEFORE the first GOP primary was held.

I honestly can't think of an issue where my mind has been more thoroughly changed by listening to people on social media. While MAiD is something that in principle I'd support, it's not possible to have it as a truly consensual option under current systems- something I learned from disabled folks.
A woman in Saskatchewan needs surgery for a parathyroid issue and is being offered MAiD instead.

There’s no one in the province who can perform the procedure and the government won’t pay to send her elsewhere.

This is why disability advocates warn about assisted dying
