We are not out of the woods, not by a long shot.

The horrors are here, they have not receded.

At the same time, the regime has overplayed its hand and failed in its efforts of total consolidation of power.

I don't see a path to their realizing totalitarian control.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

I don't think every or even most journalists are this utterly corrupt. The investigative folks I know have always conducted themselves pretty scrupulously, and I'm currently forced to conclude that's why they haven't hit the big-time

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

Watch out! My outfit's ridiculous!
In the club looking so conspicuous!
And rawr! These women all on the prowl!
If you hold the head steady, I'ma milk the cow!
And forget about game, I'ma spit the Truth!
I won't stop 'til I get 'em in their birthday suit!

Immantise the eschaton. That’s what we’re going to do folks. We’re going to immantentise – such a beautiful word, it means bring forward or make immediate – the eschaton. You’re going to love the eschaton. The Democrats, they say no, don’t immantentise the eschaton – well we’re going to do it folks

Happy birthday to the Soviet linguist Yuri Knorozov who casually deciphered the Mayan script in 1952 and got pissed when editors removed his cat as co-author on papers or cropped her out of his author headshot (the only picture of himself he even liked)

Will Stancil waggling his bare ass at the internet: "We already have cities and no one wants to live in them. Do you think that opinion is bad? Am I very bad boy?"
This isn’t true, we have built lots of non-sprawly places, and while they’re good and I like them and want to build more, one thing that hasn’t happened is that people have in any real way abandoned sprawl for these places

apropos of nothing in particular, Saudi Arabia has a population of 35 million but only 19 million are citizens, in part because only Muslims can be citizens of Saudi Arabia, so the ~2 million Christians in the country are “foreign workers” forever, even if born there

Cooperative societies looking at Predator technology: “Where do they get all those wonderful toys?”
Badlands was fun and while I typically don't care about this sort of thing, it's hard to see how a culture like the Yautja could ever cooperate long enough to develop space travel.
Nobody has ever done anything interesting or unexpected with the culture of the Predators onscreen, that they probably aren't ever going to, and I think I've just made my peace with it
