Everything here. And let me add as someone who lived outside the US for several years, many countries that pride themselves on being better than the US simply choose a different target for the same bigoted laws. See the way Roma & Travellers are treated
The thing about being an US born person of immigrant extraction who has also lived in a couple of other countries and traveled to a bunch more is... I can be both very clear eyed in the way the US sucks while also being aware of how other countries use the USA's failings to distract from their own.

Here’s the thing, emerging scientists aren’t going to flee to do science elsewhere…they just won’t do the science.

We will lose at least one, if not two generations of knowledge if we don’t get this shit sorted out immediately.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

Many, many of the programs targeted for cuts have no problem filling seats, producing credits, bringing in revenue. Their elimination is ideological, there's just no other reasonable explanation.
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

Feminists are supposed to be the man-haters, but here's a guy who equates masculinity with murder.
A Palantir billionaire just called for public hangings.

“It's time to bring back masculine leadership to protect our most vulnerable,” writes Joe Lonsdale.

This is where Silicon Valley authoritarianism is heading:

sure, you could talk shit about people behind their backs, but gossiping with your friends about how cool and good your mutual pals are is genuinely so much fun.

get loved, nerds! get absolutely adored!
I am embarrassed to have an opinion about what a director I’ve only seen I think 3 movies by said on a podcast but every time I’ve ever seen Matthew Lillard in a movie I’ve enjoyed it; giving props to work you like rules over being catty and rude, & people who think catty and rude is good are bores

like so much of what Silicon Valley is up to these days, it's almost impossible to figure out how much of this "Network State" stuff is serious efforts at techno-fascism, and how much is just grifting a childish elite with gobs of cash and a child's understanding of politics

$1500/mo is less than my mortgage and the number of ways to play spoiler for an uncontrolled social experiment is essentially an infinite source of entertainment. Sign me up, I bet I could destroy utopia inside of a fiscal quarter
your fair share of taxes: an unconscionable ripoff at best, and theft at worst

So, to all the "RFK's got some good ideas" folks (Rachael Bedard, Leana Wen) and Jay Bhattacharya is "an excellent choice for NIH" (Steven Macedo, Frances Lee) and Vinay Prasad "will bring a breath of fresh air to FDA" (Adam Cifu, John Mandrola) groupies--you own this now too.
I think the *speed* at which RFK Jr and his Great Barrington Declaration/anti-vaxx/Brownstone wrecking crew have been dismantling the US public health system has been really astonishing
Well, Senators Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis, you wanted RFK Jr. to “go wild” at HHS.

Congratulations. You’ve achieved your goal. He is well on his way to completely destroying the US vaccine program.

the Waffle House Paradox is this. often i, in new york, yearn to eat at Waffle House, whose territory does not extend this far north. but relenting to my desire for a local Waffle House would degrade the beauty of the place, which is partly in its highly localized inaccessibility

i'm glad that stem colleagues now care that university administrators' claims of departmental "profitability" are all bullshit now that it's coming for them but a little solidarity while the humanities endured this for decades would've been cool

public libraries can play a role in popular resistance to the reduction of culture to bitstreams, but it’s important to remember that public libraries have a mandate to develop their collections, and that means regular weeding. this is why resource sharing (i.e. ILL) is essential. 📚
Most public libraries are culling their physical media because it doesn’t circulate. If you want libraries to hold something, you need to check it out. Public libraries can’t just be warehouses for physical media you might want someday. Use it or lose it.
When we talk about physical media, we are often only taking about personal collections but a big part of shunning the current digital ecosystem is supporting your local library. Not just for print books and periodicals but for movies, games and other medias too. Get. A. Library. Card.

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore

historically speaking this not correct, but the issue there may hinge on whether or not and to what extent this enterprise we call a country has ever been either sustainable or a democracy

An interesting profile of a liberal white woman who I wasn't aware of until she interviewed Cory Booker and grilled him on his support for Israel. The piece devotes a few paragraphs to this, and how support for Palestine is now a mainstream position among liberals, but not Democratic congresspeople.

The FDA commissioner suggests the Montauk Monster (almost certainly a racoon carcass that washed ashore in 2008) was created by "mad scientists."
It's so interesting to me how Makary conspiracy code switches when he talks to podcasters vs national news. This is the kind of stuff MAHA hears from the FDA Commissioner.

Forty years ago, 90% of media outlets were spread across 50 companies.

Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.

This consolidation hurts consumers and helps oligarchs. 🧵
