Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

Read Jim's whole thread! I also want to add some historical context. During the 1918 pandemic, there was so much confusion because many scientists still thought that a bacteria, not a virus caused the flu (because, as Jim notes, we couldn't even see viruses under a microscope yet).
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stated that the 1918 flu pandemic was caused by a lab virus from vaccine research, a defective influenza vaccine. Let’s analyze what a lie this is. First, in 1918, 107 years ago, virology was in its infancy

“The media isn’t covering this” is a statement about your own media diet. Yes, I am painfully aware that legacy outlets have the biggest audiences. It is good to criticize their coverage. But I would love to see even a fraction of that energy directed to helping smaller outlets gain bigger audiences

Since disability in science has come up a bunch lately, I thought I'd share my upcoming trip to the AAS, our winter conference.

I'm on a panel, moderating a panel, and giving a talk on disability justice.

I fly on January 3rd. Prep starts now.

Residents in mid-Atlantic states like Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania who have spent the last few years plagued by high electricity bills just got some bad news: Relief is not on the way.

There’s just not enough electricity to meet rising demand. https://cnn.it/4ja4CAR

i continue to see discussions about datacenter water usage and i am obliged to reup this
how much water does it take to disrupt the careers of millions of people? how much water does it take to make deepfakes of underage kids? how much water does it take to exacerbate people's mental health crises? is there a good number? is there an acceptable number?

Alt in comments-- FCC's response to CNN throttling the 60 minutes piece.
A free press cannot function if the government is able to exercise veto power over critical reporting simply by refusing to engage.

The public has the right to question how CBS will ensure the independence and integrity of its journalism going forward.

Important context here: when Peter Thiel and David Sacks began their war on diversity as undergrads at Stanford, thirty years ago, the very first tactic they adopted was to normalize slurs that had already been stigmatized out of mainstream society. This return of these hateful terms was a key goal.
“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.

Fwiw I think the “apologize for being white” thing is very clearly about making sure white people don’t feel an obligation to alleviate past injustices or make society fairer. Ultimately to do that you have to raise taxes and the billionaires holding Vance’s leash don’t want that.

This is plainly what’s happening to NASA, and why NSF is being gutted. Yes, your favorite galaxy might get a glossy image from JWST next year, but the field of astronomy is actively being torn to shreds and we’re not even being honest about it with ourselves!
I just wish someone would be honest and say “we are ending civilian science in favor of science that is focused on serving national security and war”

This framing is dishonest. It was a bipartisan bill. Enough Republicans actually defected and voted no to kill the bill. Three Democrats crossed over to save it.

They should be stripped of their committee assignments and thrown out of the party, quite frankly.
Today House Republicans voted 216-211 to pass MTG’s bill to criminalize gender-affirming care for minors nationwide, marking the first time a national ban on care for trans youth has reached — and passed — the House floor.
