Last year, I posted about the consecration of Westminster Abbey, which is now 960 years ago.
959 years ago, in 1065, Westminster Abbey was consecrated after having been rebuilt under the command of Edward the Confessor. A week later, Edward died and was buried here. His death would trigger a succession dispute and eventually lead to the Norman Conquest.

I always thought Plato was pretty pollyannaish on this point, but this is decent evidence for the view that a man of bad character will therefore be unhappy even with every external trapping of success and good fortune.
President Donald Trump gifted the world with nearly 200 Truth Social posts (and counting) on Christmas Day, where he amplified conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and called for a member of Congress to be deported.

Nöel Coward called his style of work ‘touch and Gauguin,’ and although this sounds pretentious, it was his way of describing the colours he used. The majority of his paintings are of Jamaica; he first visited the island with Ian Fleming, in 1948.

We could try to make Leiber a posthumous bestseller by claiming his 1943 novel "Conjure Wife" as Dark Academia. (It was filmed multiple times, most famously as "Burn, Witch, Burn" aka "Night of the Eagle".)
It is the birthday of Fritz Leiber, (pronounced Lie-ber) the man who coined the term sword & sorcery and who wrote some of the best work in the genre. I actually read Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser in prose before I read Conan. He was also a fantastic author of horror and fantasy.Just a wonderful writer.

Trump: We track Santa. We want to make sure that Santa is being good. We want to make sure that he's not infiltrated, that we're not infiltrating into our country a bad Santa. Santa loves Oklahoma like I do. You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election

Watching the carols from King's and, when this is over, we really need a root and branch review of the level of difficulty of the paper rounds these choirboys are enduring.
There are laws against that sort of hard labour that are clearly being flouted. It's like watching Grease and I don't approve.

Good points 🍳
If you were to ask a chatbot for help with an old recipe, it could use a thousand year old unit that is wildly wrong, because it stole that snippet of text from a recipe book.

It could give you an ingredient that absolutely no longer means what it did 200 years ago, because it stole that book too

Sadness arrives uninvited. Joy demands more—it requires us to search, to kindle, to protect the flame against every wind. When we choose joy despite everything that argues against it, we don't just save ourselves—we illuminate the way for everyone around us.

Encouraging undergraduates to *start* with AI, robs them of the skills they need to begin learning how to be a history detective. And when you move up to the graduate level, AI doesn't have access to actual archives. And it cannot produce new knowledge. *YOU* have to do that.
