this is a broader point but something the extract below touches on is that smartphones have made "not being online" an active choice you have to make every minute of every day, and as it states it *is* a mental tax you have to pay, and I'm not sure we've reckoned with that at all

These guys are unpopular and dumb as rocks, they did not discover a secret 'I win' button at the heart of all politics labeled 'mean tweets' or 'cancel elections.'

Keep speaking, keep writing, keep marching, keep voting, force them to show the country what they are.

Pardon me, but while MAGA and Trump may want to use it that way, we don't need to let them.

I think it is absolutely the case that Trump aspires to be something like a fascist dictator, I said so last October.

But we are not powerless and they have not won yet.
It's pretty clear that they got their Reichstag Fire with the Kirk assassination. Democracy is dead.

We now have a fascist dictator.

good video hands-on with meta's smart glasses. i've been skeptical on smart glasses for a while, but it looks like the hardware side of this is finally becoming feasible? plus, in a world where kids list "creator" as their dream job, POV video recording is v attractive youtu.be/5cVGKvl7Oek?...

I think I'd put "crazy thing Herotodus wrote being true" at maybe closer to 50/50, but that's still turned out to be *much* higher than we would have credited him pre-archaeology.

The value of archaeology (and sources in languages not Latin/Greek) to confirm/disconfirm our sources is significant!
Herodotus rules because the history of the historiography of his work is like “oh that can’t possibly be true” and then we figure out that what he wrote was mostly in fact true.
It's reasonable to think every European/near Eastern source was repeating the same rumor. But there are also Chinese sources, and it's unlikely they got it from Herodotus.

The Medes and Sassanians, meanwhile, took the trouble to clarify inheritance laws for increasingly bizarre family trees.

IDK how many ways she can keep saying the same thing. She's hoisting the red flag about as far as it's possible to hoist. A SCOTUS member is out there telling you the court is no longer a court of law.
Jackson: “This is Calvinball jurisprudence with a twist. Calvinball has only one rule: There are no fixed rules. We seem to have two: that one, and this Administration always wins.”

This but entirely unironically because: I drove through le Camp du Drap d'Or, down a motorway now lined on both sides with wind turbines, and they are beautiful? Functional, yes, and probably scuffed and dirty up close- like an old stone aqueduct- but beautiful. Truly.
2000 years ago: the Romans would let an aqueduct destroy the Gardon Valley. We need clean water, but at what cost?
