Wow. The National actually summing up points from the Sandy Peggie case *accurately*!!! Seriously, read this. I learned new things about how very much NOT a win for Peggie this was (and I thought I already knew that).
But The National really does it much, much better!

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer today. I need to move her out of Texas and in with me in a sanctuary state as soon as humanly possible, but the academic job search continues to stay silent, and two fellowship applications have rejected me this year. If you know of anything, please lmk.

Just a reminder, the Trumpstein Files are about child abuse. That’s a devastating & life-changing experience & can be triggered by discussions & even posts about abuse. So take care to centre authentic solidarity with survivors. Do not use them for your political agenda.

In the pub last night, accosted by a chugger (Brit: charity mugger) in a tabard saying their company is raising money for a charity and will we pledge for the disabled kiddies.

My friend S: Are you a registered charity?
Him: We’re raising money for a charity.

Thing I learned today: “duck tape” is a far older term than “duct tape.” It used to be made with cotton duck. “Duct tape” is a combination of people trying to make sense, and its association with post war use in HVAC systems.

What a surprise - BBC News presenting Peggie's tribunal as a victory when reading the judgement shows she and her GC backers - Sex Matters - lost on almost every point, and referring to Dr Upton as a "biological male". The transphobic bias is so blatant, it is visible from space. Impartial, my arse!

This is my mum on her FB page. She's 81, and the WI is the highlight of her month. She goes to the town one and a local village one. I know this is huge sacrifice for her. I love her so much and I am so proud of her.

I was a curate in a Pennine mill town, which back in the day had been a terrible place for TB. One of the primary schools, built in the twenties, had been designed to maximise fresh air flow in the cause of TB prevention.

Of course when antibiotics came in, the building was altered to remove this.
We're half a decade into studies finding that improving airflow in classrooms will reduce disease transmission enormously, and that bleaching surfaces etc. does very little. And yet nothing changes. Waves of flu and colds wash over schools, and the schools pretend it's an act of God.

The relative importance of close-proximity interactions, shared space and air quality to the transmission of respiratory viruses is not well understood. Here, the authors investigate this question by ...

Iceland Cricket, which has never lost an Ashes series (unless you count that volcano) should step up to offer mentoring and coaching to England until they’re ready to take their place amongst the serious cricket nations.
We have decided to switch Ashes allegiances. As a team who will always support the underdog, we recognise the dire position England are now in, having gone 17 winless games in Australia since 2011. It has become like San Marino vs. Brazil in football. England need our support.

The home secretary is fucking disgusting there is no ‘seamless” way of inflicting the violence of deporting children to a country they’ve never been to

I'd note that except when held very carefully, it's a dangerous thought for a priest, too.
Discworld QOTD, from Night Watch

“He didn’t look around, and watch and learn, and then say, ‘This is how people are, how do we deal with it?’ No, he sat and thought: ‘This is how the people ought to be, how can we change them?’ And that was a good enough thought for a priest but not for a copper…”
Discworld QOTD, from Eric

"Hell, it has been suggested, is other people.

This has always come as a bit of a surprise to many demons, who had always thought that hell was sticking sharp things into people and pushing them into lakes of blood and so on."

When I finally had a GP appointment in July this year, Dr Amr exclaimed "why on earth have you waited so long to talk to us?"
But this. This is why. "Life being stressful doesn't equal mental illness" is going to lead to thousands not seeking appropriate help, because sure, but also, it can.
The notion that visiting a GP for stress and receiving medical treatment is the easy route is so tone-deaf as to be almost ludicrous; the only thing more challenging than, say, depression is struggling with it on your own due to the stigma associated with reaching out in the first place. 4/

One assignment style I've discovered that AI cannot (yet) deal with is the "Four Sentence Essay." It has students essentially distill a whole paper into four sentences of argument between two opponents about whatever topic. It boggles the students' minds & AI just can't do the logic piece of it.
