Tonight in The December Comfort Watches: Starship Troopers. Did you know that, in a wild coincidence, there is also a novel of the same name? I talk about both in the piece! Would you like to know more?

I love this analysis.
Good-looking, abusive bullies are overrepresented among popular figures because, surprise surprise, the masses desire such a figure to rule them (see Reich, "The Mass Psychology of Fascism."
the visceral reaction I had to learning about this movie is because GASTON HAS EVERYTHING.

The town LOVES HIM even though he's an abusive bully.

He can have his pick of almost any woman in the town. But he wants Belle. And he throws his whole life away because she said no.

I didn't know about this series until I was an adult. I flew through it. It's a pure delight.
Speaking of Brian Jacques and restoring books, I recently finished cleaning up and covering this set. If anyone is interested, shoot me a DM…

Reach out to your Jewish friends and check on them. Be willing to listen. Learn about us and our history and story, a tiny 0.2% of the world, w/o making us characters in someone else’s story. Correct people who express antisemitic ideas.

And for the next 8 days, see and enjoy our lit menorahs.

Anyway the best I've ever felt about America was me (Jewish) standing in line with my friend and her daughter (Irish and Latina) to pet a baby lamb at the Minnesota State Fair alongside a hijabi Black woman and her daughter, an East Asian family, an African-American family, and some white people.

OK, internet, from a pretty awesome discussion with someone who has a different view than me, have a question. Is the following hypothetical bullying:

Someone on my block rants to his Facebook friends every Saturday about how he hates seeing the damn kike walking to synagogue

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

The son of a friend has been published in expeditionportal.com, and it's a well-written and interesting article. It's not winter-based, but it's timely for upcoming winter travel--and any travel, for that matter.

This. "We're society."
When things get tough, there’s always an impulse to hold on to what you have. You get more loss averse. And that’s normal and even smart. Just remember we’re all in this shit together. We’re society.

"The scary thing about MAGA isn’t that it’s obviously evil—it’s that it’s appealing to people who think they’re good. It offers them a way to feel righteous . . . "

Yes, it's scary, and it's also what's heartbreaking when we see it in people we've known, cared about, and thought we understood.

Yes.
My tone is just matter of fact. And I’m not required to have answers for everything. I’m a legal scholar, not an elected official.

I don’t care if people flame me. I answer only to my own conscience to be honest and give my best considered judgment.
I'm back to tell you your tone sucks and that is why you keep getting flamed. You reposted a colleague who said: "CA law is probably unconstitutional, but here are ways to make progress..." Bring that proactive energy and you won't be the "Well, akshually" guy.

"I am fully aware that my speech can get me fired." Heartbreaking statement from a courageous, principled, fair-minded, dedicated educator.
"I didn't upend my cushy life in California to sit on my hands in the Midwest." And she follows up with an inspiring statement *because* she's all those things.
I am fully aware that my speech can get me fired. Every day I wake up to news about faculty firings over what is so clearly protected academic expression.

It's horrifying. But I didn't upend my cushy life in California to sit on my hands in the Midwest.
