folks can complain about the effectiveness of scheduled orderly mass protest but to think about it another way its the closest thing we have to the opening scene of A Muppet Christmas Carol where all the muppets sing "there goes Mr. Dipshit, there goes Mr. Ass" to Scrooge and it clearly bothered him

Free healthcare to all residents of the US regardless of immigration status would rule, actually. Universal benefits for universal problems (having a body that can get sick or hurt)

Hard to overstate how transformative Jane Goodall was as a scientist.

She took the best of the scientific method--empirical observation--and used it to push back on existing scientific orthodoxies.

Holy shit I’d forgotten about this, but man, what a great and damning point.
There’s no universe where JD Vance’s vetting materials are not newsworthy but a fucking college application is.

Me: It's unwise to be charmed by politicians and you should never treat them like fictional characters you root for uncynically.

Also me: What if Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander were both mayor and had Bert & Ernie beds in Gracie Mansion?

I think this is what is most enraging about the damage they're doing not just to US alliances & partnerships, but to the federal govt, science & universities.

They are vandalizing, defacing and destroying public goods that were the product of collective effort and sacrifice & belong to all of us.
Yes, the cavalier disregard for assets collectively built up through intergenerational labor and in this case joint sacrifice reminds me of the Obama-era controversy over "You didn't build that." But at least they didn't go out and tear up the roads out of pique.

The post-COVID era is answering the question “What if an entire nation had PTSD for the same reason and very nearly none of its citizens were capable of acknowledging it, let alone being treated for it.”
The country is in a really bad mood right now and people want to hurt someone else to make them feel better.
Why did people want this? Why?

More from inside NIH:

Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday.

That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

This is what happens when you play political games with science funding. We lose knowledge and talent and research programs in progress. It harms all of us.
Yes. My husband is an NIH-funded scientist studying infectious diseases such as whooping cough, covid, & influenza. The current grant funding his salary runs out of money this summer; a delay in grant reviews means he won’t get a new grant funded before then. He’ll lose his job.

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
