I first read this poem in my father's final days. It took my breath away. Tomorrow will mark one week since we lost him, but I know he's still with us. So grateful to have (finally!) read _The People's Project_, edited by @theferocity.bsky.social and @maggiesmithpoet.bsky.social, where it appears.

It’s not necessary to keep highlighting the qualities of exceptional immigrants as a reason for them to be treated well by their governments. We don’t have to be on our best behaviour to receive a basic level of human decency: that‘s why they’re called “human rights”, and not “human privileges”.

You deserve to be able to pay your bills and have time off and take care of your family without any side hustles. You deserve to survive and thrive safely without risking your life for someone else's profit or comfort. Immigrants deserve this just as much as citizens. We're all humans just the same.

It's the time of year when I see articles telling folks to put pet fur out for bird nesting. The Cornell ornithology lab does not recommend this! Flea/tick treatments & shampoos can be toxic, long fur can entangle chicks, etc. There are much better alternatives: www.allaboutbirds.org/news/providi...

Once again I am suggesting that you break some rules for practice. Get comfortable with breaking rules. When the rules are hurting other people, the right thing to do is break them. We need people who follow their moral code over the rules of their society, university, employer, and government.

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.
