Even ignoring Nick Park, Holly Washington, Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, Pete Postlethwaite etc it's sort of magnificent that the culture secretary hasn't noticed that Sally Wainwright has made "drama set within ten miles of Halifax" a standalone TV genre.

My absolute favourite thing about Melvyn Bragg is his singular attitude of No Mucking About. Literally every episode starts like “HELLO IN 1492 COLUMBUS SAILED THE OCEAN BLUE WITH ME ARE TWO EXPERTS OK TELL ME RIGHT NOW WHERE THE FUCK IS GENOA?”
Melvyn Bragg has decided to stand down as host of In Our Time, the BBC says.

@gralefrit.bsky.social You have to see these! A friend of mine has been collating a series of images entitled "Things my students have written turned into Philomena Cunk quotes" and they're just glorious.

This is why education systems shouldn't chase "jobs of the future"....
I wrote last week about how the tech dream is ending for mid-career workers. This is a really good companion piece about how entry level tech jobs are vanishing, too, and the Silicon Valley gold rush is coming to a close: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/10/t...

Wimbledon is a microcosm for Britain: in a globalised economy, you can make a fine living as a forum for competition even if you don't produce the star players. But if you do not grow, you are overtaken; and a girdle of regulation is keeping us small.

Basically every entry on this list is obviously very funny for many reasons but I always enjoy how these people like to claim Constantinople as a great work of Based Western Christian Civilisation but then also love the Crusades. Feels like you need to pick one.

Midnight tonight is the final deadline to submit your views on the Government's proposed plans which could allow AI companies to train models on your creative work without previously asking for permission. Here's a guide on how to object if you would like to: bit.ly/govAIcopyright

This is a fabulous video essay, although I don't completely agree with all of the points- I think the character of Philomena Cunk is intended to be satirising the anti-intellectualist view, as we are not supposed to align ourselves with her-but instead to laugh at her

What an honour to welcome Martin Fraser, Irish Ambassador to the UK to Wiseman. The Ambassador met staff, watched our Irish dancers, our Gaelic footballers and discussed world affairs with A-level Politics students. A great day despite the weather ! @irishtimes.com @independent.ie @president.ie

A person can do any of these things without doing the others:

talk about an idea
believe an idea
fantasize about an idea
consider an idea

A mature mind learns to tell the difference between these things and to appreciate that others can do these things, as well.

Ppl need to understand that you can have media literacy and just disagree on a piece of art. Part of having media literacy is knowing that a text can be interpreted multiple ways. As long as we can cite our evidence in the text itself or in the genre it takes place in we are using media literacy

On the last day at their school my youngest took a bag of 100 tiny rubber ducks and hid them all over the campus.

It's been two years and today we received an email from the school asking how many tiny ducks had been hidden exactly as they were still finding them.
