She has a name, Mother. And it’s Mother

She's a nurse & grandmother who had been here for 30 years

She had a work permit

She was taken when she went to her annual ICE check-in

She was shipped to Ghana, where she was dragged on the floor.

She was then shipped to Sierra Leone, from which she had fled, and *despite a court order.*
Ms. Kuyateh was one of 19 third-country nationals sent to Ghana on Nov. 6. At least 61 TCNs have been removed there since September.

Others report similar treatment. Nigerians were forced to cross into Togo w/o documents, rendering them essentially stateless

Woman deported from Maryland shown on video being dragged in Ghana
Rabbiatu Kuyateh was detained this summer at her annual ICE check-in, her son said. She moved to the D.C. area 30 years ago as she fled civil war in Sierra Leone.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

For those of us who teach journalism students about ethics, we've had some astonishingly clear lessons recently, including one from a former NYT reporter. Great stuff from @sulliview.bsky.social

Extremely here for the creative and consummately human responses we see (and do!) to the slop onslaught 🤌
Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

11 years ago today, 12 year old Tamir Rice was gunned down by police officers on Cleveland’s west side.

The officer shot him within seconds of arriving at the park he was playing in.

Tamir’s life mattered. It still does. My thoughts are with his family today.

I’ve often called this song—“Just Like Heaven”—the finest single of the 80s and meant it. This cover’s arrangement only confirms it for me 💜🔥

If you read ONE story today about what an awful person Bobby Kennedy Jr is, make it this one by Tatianna Schlossberg who is an incredible writer in the face of real tragedy.

One thing that’s very funny about living in Canada as an American is that they don’t give a single shit that US Thanksgiving is on Thursday but they pull out all the stops for Black Friday. It’s truly a standalone holiday here

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

Like our current elected tyrant, the Spanish fascist dictator Franco was a corrupt and corrupting villain.

Unlike Trump, though, Franco benefited from anti-communist mythmaking that he was above corruption and had been a brilliant military strategist.

I find this sort of doomerism so exhausting. The House overwhelmingly voted to release the files. The Senate looks poised to do the same. This is a monumentally unpopular President. Why do we need to immediately assume the worst? It may happen, sure, but these kinds of responses are so unhelpful.
