This is ALSO hugely beneficial to people within publishing companies. Employees in any industry have v little legal leverage to keep AI out of our jobs, but authors have contracts that can keep AI off the books we work on.
I waited 14 months for a publisher to issue a contract with a "no AI" clause (it had to be all lawyered, whatever). I'd do it again. I'm not agreeing to AI covers, audio, translations, blurb, anything. We stand together or we fall apart.
Writers: before you sign a contract with a publisher, make sure AI isn't replacing your illustrator, your translator, your editor, your jacket designer. Readers: if you're thinking of buying a book, do the same. Refuse. Resist. If AI garbage doesn't sell, people will stop making it.
