yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

Another galling example of this: It's been said that Trump's hatred of the "deep state" is rooted in hatred of its "warmongering." But Trump hates the deep state because it tried to hold him accountable for his crimes and because a professional civil service is a barrier to authoritarian corruption!

personally I think if a story about an illegal war and kidnapping leaks to you should publish it.
NEW: Plans for secret U.S. raid to capture Maduro leaked to the Washington Post and New York Times before it happened, but both decided not to publish to protect U.S. troops - Semafor

You should be embarrassed to be a member of congress and issuing anything other than impeachment resolutions. You're in the model UN. They should give you legos and a propeller hat

Okay here’s an actual take: the fascist international is at war with the very concept of legitimacy.
Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

Im seeing discussions about consultations with congress, authorizations of force etc. I have to say this transcends any of what I would call sub constitutional technicalities. The president has gone to war with a foreign power and, it seems, kidnapped a foreign head of state on the basis of nothing.

The Senate tradition of unanimously confirming colleagues from the chamber has directly led to millions of deaths and the collapse of the last shreds of the rule of law, when you consider Rubio’s role in illegally disbanding USAID and various illegal strikes, abductions, and expulsions.

This is a Mafia State. Really no other was to put it.
Trump's threat to bomb Iran made something clear to me in a way I hadn't yet formulated: His conception of US military force, like his conception of the federal govt, is now entirely personalized. It is a power to be wielded not on behalf of US interests but on behalf of his personal whims.

Maduro terrorized his dissent in Venezuela and expanded his power through violence. His right wing opponents cozied up to Western fascists, corporate interests and Christian nationalists to obtain power through violent regime change via the U.S.

The people of Venezuela have been used as pawns.

Once again, decades of ludicrous ‘Drug War’ and ‘War on Terror’ rhetoric and policy laid the groundwork for this. These are the sorts of things that must be uprooted.

one of my recent preoccupations is the visceral hostility the MAGA right has for the histories and traditions of the United States. these are people who spit on the Declaration and salute third-rate European despots!
It's striking that progressives like Tim Walz and Zohran Mamdani evoke the middle American attitude that, "Yes, we can fix these social problems because we're Americans and it's the right thing to do!" While the "America first" right only emulates failed and failing nation-states elsewhere.

I don't want to give this clicks, but there is a big push from the right to heighten policing and punishment in K-12 schools at the same time as they impose censorship and push RW indoctrination there and as they heighten surveillance and militarize local policing.
