Local small independent bookstore in Milwaukee said exactly this in a recent social post, circling back on the point they might not make it to 2026 if they don't have a big holiday weekend, and it got shared by basically every record store and small business concern over the last week.
Remember - if you're financially in a position to do so, skip the #BlackFriday deals online from big companies and shop instead from small and local businesses.
The big guns don't need your money, but for small traders it can be what keeps them going into 2026, so support your community instead.

AI kind of feels like the endgame of this bit Graeber described in the original Bullshit Jobs essay: these people have been so thoroughly cleaved from any sense of purpose that they resent those who have one. They hate artists for their skill and think poverty should be the price of having a calling

in the last 1.5 years journalistic fact-checking has become significantly harder specifically bc of this, without touching all the other ways education and knowledge-sharing are under attack rn (book bans, censorship, media industry crumbling, etc etc)
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

the main reason to buy cheap coffee is it tastes bad but gets the job done. the main reason to buy expensive coffee gear and specialty beans is it tastes bad and it's your fault. once again everything comes back to catholic brain or protestant brain

Another day in the damn Jason Bourne Response Suite. I'm wearing a blue dress shirt and a headset and just absolutely getting reamed out by a veteran character actor re: him "needing eyes" or whatever. No sense of when or if we're ordering lunch. I tried to get a coffee and Joan Allen glared at me.

Everything is optimized and smoothed and polished and averaged out and copied and pasted. You can't make art like that

I see young artists relying on digital models and reusable assets (often because of the need to make art as fast as possible which is a whole other problem), and it sucks the life out of the work. You can argue art school is a scam but I learned a lot drawing on paper and looking at a human model

call me a luddite or whatever, but i think one of the most important things we’ve been robbed of being inundated w/ ai is the importance of effort

i’m all for tech making jobs safer, but creative pursuits beg to be mentally and emotionally laborious

it’s endearing when people actually *try*

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

"things happen" describes the evil of our age. living in the zeitgeist of collectively disavowed agency, from chatgpt to historical atrocities to everyday violence. it just happened. I was unaware. couldn't be me
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."
