Kids are excellent mimics.

Thus one should be careful before saying out loud: you are amazing, you are beautiful, we spoil you so much, it's a wonder that you don't have the swelled head of a god.

Toddler: I DO have the swelled head of a god.

Some of my fellow manuscript nerds may not be familiar with the thriving practices around handwritten Torah scrolls, which should be remedied! So have a 🧵

Torah scrolls as we know them are about two thousand years old, and have been essentially identical to one another for the last thousand years.

I have been thinking much too much about the biology of mermaids and it doesn't make sense. Obviously, they are mammals - they have tails that go up and down like a dolphin. But their tail fins are like a rayfin fish, and you don't see them come to the surface for air.

Selkies make more sense.

I met Robin Wood (who drew/painted The People of Pern, one of the best books of fictional portraiture ever, also many book covers) and I was in awe of her - and she told me how she got started drawing pictures of Spock at conventions to make a bit of money to buy food.

Maybe a major celebrity
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I am not complaining.

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).
Lay article attached:
One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Every few years, the tires on your car wear thin and need to be replaced. But where does that lost tire material go? The answer, unfortunately, is often waterways, where the tiny microplastic particle...

AI tech bros promising to allow you to talk to a digital simulacrum of your dead relatives as a false comfort during your natural process of grief are, I’m afraid, in contravention of the 1736 Witchcraft Act, the 1951 Fraudulent Mediums Act, and should be hanged. I don’t make the rules.

This is an awesome Goosefish.

I also now know that Goosefish (Geesefish?) exist, and my life is so much better now.
This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.

This is a GOOSEFISH.

This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.

It’s a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But it’s as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

This thread has a good explanation about the changes at the US Coast Guard re hate symbols that goes over what is actually happening, what it might mean in the future
(1/9) The CG and Hate Symbols: What We Know So Far (a thread).

Yesterday, WaPo reported that the CG has removed swastikas, confederate flags, and nooses from a list of "hate symbols". This is both technically correct, and an oversimplification.

@alicefraser.bsky.social I'm sorry for being months behind on Realms Unknown - but about Tamora Pierce's Alanna series: Alanna is 11 in the first book, and I read them first when I was 9 or 10 (in 1986-7), and they were terrific for that age.

It's always best to give food banks money - also, maybe then Loblaws doesn't get a cut
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"
