This poem by William Stafford means so much to me. “Smoke Signals: A Dedication” opened Stafford’s book A Glass Face in the Rain, from 1982.

William Stafford’s poem “Smoke Signals: A Dedication” There are people on a parallel way. We do not see them often, or even think of them often, but it is precious to us that they are sharing the world. Something about how they have accepted their lives, or how the sunlight happens to them, helps us to hold the strange, enigmatic days in line for our own living. It is important that these people know this recognition, but it is also important that no purpose or obligation related to this be intruded into their lives. This book intends to be for anyone, but especially for those on that parallel way: here is a smoke signal, unmistakable but unobtrusive—we are following what comes, going through the world, knowing each other, building our little fires.

My brief review of the film BRING HER BACK: Deeply unsettling—bordering on perverse—and unrelentingly grim, BRING HER BACK is more a dark, suspenseful meditation on grief and its suppression than a bona fide horror movie. Though it contains several shocks and quease-inducing gore, there’s not a chuckle to be had in its entire running time. It’s beautifully shot, and yet feels suffocatingly oppressive. With Sally Hawkins as a crazed, manipulative monster of a foster mother, and three young actors whose portrayals of suffering are so convincing as to be nearly unbearable.

This is one of my favorite photos of Mother and me. It was the last time I ever saw her sober, about 1991. There’s a clarity about her here and a sparkle in her eyes that had been a rarity in preceding years, and was never to be seen again subsequently.

Easter Morning by William Stafford Maybe someone comes to the door and says, "Repent," and you say, "Come on in," and it's Jesus. That's when all you ever did, or said, or even thought, suddenly wakes up again and sings out, "I'm still here," and you know it's true. You just shiver alive and are left standing there suddenly brought to account: saved. Except, maybe that someone says, "I've got a deal for you." And you listen, because that's how you're trained—they told you, "Always hear both sides." So then the slick voice can sell you anything, even Hell, which is what you're getting by listening. Well, what should you do? I'd say always go to the door, yes, but keep the screen locked. Then, while you hold the Bible in one hand, lean forward and say carefully, "Jesus?"

My brief review of the movie ‘Sinners’: An audacious vampire horror film by Ryan Coogler that’s also a showcase for Michael B. Jordan in multiple roles. The movie manages to examine (and embody) the horrors of Black people’s experience in America; it also, astonishingly, uses extended musical and dance sequences to advance the film’s growing sense of unease and terror. Yes, it’s A LOT, and Coogler’s ambitiousness ends up feeling like overreach at times, with perhaps one too many metaphors.  But it’s hard to think of another recent film that comes close to the daring of SINNERS.

NEWS: In today's declaration filed by the government in Kilmar Abrego Garcia's case, the govt still provides no information or past or current efforts to facilitate Abrego Garcia's return. Instead, an asst dir of ICE suggests that Abrego Garcia "is no longer eligible for withholding of removal."
7. On March 15, 2025, Abrego-Garcia, a native and citizen of El Salvador, was removed to El Salvador, pursuant to Title 8 of the United States Code. Although Abrego-Garcia has an order of removal issued by an immigration judge, I understand that he should not have been removed to El Salvador because the immigration judge had also granted Abrego-Garcia withholding of removal to El Salvador. However, I also understand that Abrego Garcia is no longer Case 8:25-cv-00951-PX Document 64 Filed 04/13/25 Page 2 of 3 eligible for withholding of removal because of his membership in MS-13 which is now a designated foreign terrorist organization. I have reviewed the declaration of Mr. Michael Kozak, which was filed in this case yesterday, April 12, 2025. So far, about 1000 students have had their visas revoked.

Rubio has claimed these are activists that have vandalized libraries, taken over campuses, and done all sorts of crazy things. But Rubio or the State Dept refuses to get into the details. So lets do that.
