Mammalian cells have KSR, budding yeast has Ste5… and fission yeast has Sms1 as the MAPK scaffold for sexual reproduction!

Very excited to share my postdoc work where we discover that the hemi-arrestin Sms1 binds all components of the MAPK cascade, including ERK-like Spk1

doi.org/10.1101/2025...
Schematic of MAPK signalling in fission yeast, budding yeast and Metazoa. No MAPK scaffold was known for ERK-like MAPK in fission yeast, as opposed to budding yeast Ste5 and metazoan KSR1/2.

1/6 Extremely happy to share my PhD work is out on bioRxiv! We discovered that microtubules deform mitotic centrosomes. When we removed them, the SPD-5 scaffold became denser but didn't lose material. This suggests it's an elastically deformable solid! This only happens in mitosis.

[We are Hiring!]

The Weiss Lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (NY) is hiring a Postdoc Scientist to explore the Toxoplasma gondii cyst wall using XL-MS, Split TurboID, & U-ExM.

This project aims to unlock new strategies for treating toxoplasmosis.

DM for more info!

Lately I've been only posting images of really interesting protist here, but something that many don't know is that most of my time i'm expanding 'boring' mammalian cells and that I love human centrioles. Don't tell me that they are not beautiful😍👁️

Years ago we discovered that missense mutations in homomeric proteins often induces their supramolecular assembly, as in the 📽️👇 - Are such aberrant assemblies of *folded* proteins toxic? Surprisingly, NO. Cells are amazingly robust systems! Paper now online @molsystbiol.org doi.org/10.1038/s443...
