Was just thinking about the term “democratic socialist.” How liberals who wanna entertain Socialist thought like to add "democratic" to it to make themselves look like "good" people. Socialism by definition—workers owning the means of production—is the most democratic system you could ever imagine.

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”

The thing about the history of eugenics is that *a lot of people supported it, including a lot of otherwise progressive people* from Margaret Sanger to Felipe Carrillo Puerto. It's a cautionary tale, less about evil people in the past than about "could we be doing the same thing with something else"
kathleenbelew.bsky.social
Before everyone gets all freaked out about this: yes, Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist who believed in contraception to eliminate less desirable babies. Yes, super icky and unfortunate. But yes, she was also a pioneer for women's bodily autonomy. Complexity is one of the lessons of history.

“Thúy has been a Quebecer longer than Bock-Côté has been alive. Why is she being treated by him as a foreigner, branded as ungrateful the minute she criticizes policies & rhetoric that deeply impact Quebec’s reputation and many Quebecers’ sense of belonging?”

"Remember, there is nothing that cannot be used in soup. The list of ingredients for bread, cakes, candy, sweet dishes, is confined to comparatively few under each heading, but there is no edible substance which may not be used in soup."

Holy shit guys.

The opening of "A Book of Unusual Soups", originally published in 1923. I am kind of in awe of the beauty of this writing.
As a nation we have been accused of indifference
and lukewarmness towards soup. Our lack of appreciation is due to the many disappointments we
have experienced in the soups we were born to, those
we failed to achieve, and those that were thrust upon
us.
No wonder we are found furtively to shirk the
soup course whenever we can, and to violate good
usage by employing some improper substitute for it.
