I had missed this. Perverse even by the standards of the Trump White House. They’re threatening to pull student aid from Brown over the shooting www.nbcboston.com/news/local/t...
Trump administration investigates Brown's security after shooting
The Department of Education said its Office of Federal Student Aid would investigate if Brown University violated the Higher Education Act in connection with the deadly shooting on Dec. 13.

If nothing matters any more, if crime is legal, why not just hand campaign money to people directly? Why not just pay people to vote? Musk did it, after all! /s

Clearly there's some *vague* desire to be, or at least seem, less openly corrupt than Republicans. I think we should lean into that.

Damn, I honestly never knew that until now either! I feel like most US history courses/resources act like nothing important happened between the Civil War and WWI besides Gilded Age labor rights disputes and Jim Crow, and none of those presidents are ever discussed at all

“I hate when parties text me asking for donations” and also “the democrats should operate a robust network of aid distribution centers across the country” make it make sense.

There’s a whole lot of “Trump did X therefore Democrats should too” without grappling with the “it was bad and/or illegal and/or unconstitutional that he did that” of it all.

I feel like I’m going crazy because real folks who should know better, like lawyers and stuff, are perpetuating this idea that DoJ’s records was this Blagojevich-esque thing that was fuckin golden and they squandered it.

"we should have more insular and openly corrupt politics because it's worked for the right"

No it hasn't! The right, even though they control every lever of power, is in shambles and can't stop attacking itself and/or eating shit at every conceivable opportunity!

We don't want that for Dems!

This just all circles back to the fact that Bernie letting the Ron Paul idiots into the tent in 2015/2016 doomed online leftism to passionately, permanently embrace a bunch of deeply stupid ideas

The thing about the current jurisprudence is that it treats Democrats and Republicans drastically differently.

That, and we shouldn't throw out campaign finance rules just because Republicans do.
Where I land on the Kat Abu thing is that campaign finance rules feel like they come from a different, West Wing-ier era of politics that feels incredibly out of touch with current jurisprudence on corruption of public officials and oh yeah Trump II

I took AP history, so I was introduced to the concept of ending partisan spoils system of handing out government jobs to one's supporters, but even then, I didn't learn that Garfield was assassinated because of his efforts to end it until that latest documentary.

I highly encourage people to read up on what finally cracked Tammany, it was a system built on favors, privately picking candidates, stocking government positions with loyalists, and inside dealing.

Tammany Hall died *because national social services came into being* and suggesting a RETVRN to these strategies feels like we've already given up on the actual solution of a robust national social service network.

Ben Kingsley’s birth name is Khrishna Pandit Bhanji, and yet I have seen his casting as Gandhi being described as whitewashing a number of times!
Kingsley is definitely the OG “looks vaguely ethnic unless the role needs him not to” actor.

I’d also nominate Edward James Olmos here.
