In the War on Empathy, I am choosing to fight on the side of empathy. Opinions are my own & definitely do not reflect those of my workplace. Given the bad faith actors on here, unless I know you or we share a mutual, I will probably block you. Sorry.

display name does not necessarily imply endorsement in case you're that kind of person going to @ me about how it's classist and eurocentric.

I am an academic, and my mood is frequently dark now, so....

so a little from Column A, a little from Column B

will say Johnson has that Short Man Energy (derogatory)
acerbicotter.bsky.social
looking at those photos of Thune and Johnson together, is it a trick of the camera, or is Thune really tall or is Johnson really tiny? I mean, I get that it doesn't MATTER but it struck me
acerbicotter.bsky.social
and that's even beyond "kid gets lost in the woods and it's a big parcel, what's the fastest way to try to find them"

Field biologist here and YES. there are many data collection in the field uses for drones, many "hecking cool" uses for them just looking at sites from above, less intrusive ways to sample, early warning of e.g., hog damage at sites....

Canadian Super-Hogg would be an excellent drag king or male stripper name
hudsonrivercroc.bsky.social
So now we not only have to worry about Canadian geese but Canadian super hogs?!?
sharonk.bsky.social
here is the current tactical map of where feral swine populations have consolidated

the major worry is if the Canadian superhogs end up making their way down south and breeding with the American hogs

How is it that guys in the upper echelons of government appear* to know even less about how these work than I do, a person who never even had an actual Civics class?

(*I don't think for a minute they don't know, they don't care, they figure the leopard will never eat THEIR face)

Oh, does it benefit the US to provide aid to foreign countries? That would have been good to know back in January and February.

I hope my relative isn't one of them but I wouldn't be TOO surprised.

I hope Russ Vought loses his job sometime and struggles to find a new one. He won't, but I can hope it.

And the lawsuits will follow promptly. Government shutdowns give presidents no additional authority to dismiss federal workers. We’ll fight these outrageous assaults on civil servants and public services.

BUT ANYWAY I fully expect to get yelled at for not being even more accommodating than I am, because most people seem to think I'm an infinite work machine who lives 24/7 in my office and thrives on grading
acerbicotter.bsky.social
But I'm tired, and not getting my research done, and I feel like no one other than maybe my chair sees how I'm practically drowning. Or more likely, the upper admins don't care and won't care until I quit or stop producing for them
acerbicotter.bsky.social
Also they want us to tell them an hour next week WHEN WE ALL CAN MEET so they can talk at us about some new convoluted system we have to use. And they suggested our fall break day! Fortunately a couple colleagues CAN'T as they have field trips scheduled (and another person flat refused)
acerbicotter.bsky.social
And NO a lot of these are things I cannot outsource to online - drawings from lab, hand-calculations in stats, and I am NOT going back to trying to grade blurry cell phone photos like I did in 2020.

It's just, it's so much. They keep layering new **** on faculty and I'm breaking under the strain
acerbicotter.bsky.social
someone unable to succeed, but it's hurting ME at this point. Also I am LOSING assignments in the pit of my office because I am ADHD and maybe have a little of the old 'tism and I'm OVERLOADED teaching four classes, which means some weeks I have 100 pieces of paper to deal with
acerbicotter.bsky.social
batch done, and then a few more pieces dribble in. the homework that COULD be copied off of if I hand it back "early" I can't hand back until I have all of it in (this is bad for feedback for the other students).

I do the thing because it's apparently the law and I don't want to break it or make
acerbicotter.bsky.social
Okay, I am making a trepidatious post on this because I know people will yell at me for not being happier about it but:

The "extra time on assignments" (so people can choose to hand in a homework a week late if they have it) is driving me round the bend. The grading NEVER STOPS, y'all. I get a

Yeah, but maybe if they give in to brainrot it'll be easier to soylent-green them, and that's the plan now?

You know how there’s been this big push towards encouraging older people to do puzzles, cognitive games, and to learn new things to keep them from succumbing to dementia?

Wonder where that’s gonna go with the rise of “outsource your cognitive functions to AI, it’ll be convenient” culture
steveisdamages.bsky.social
Cognition is like strength. Use is required to not just gain, but maintain. The more thinking and cognitive work we offload, the duller we become as a result.

It's like deciding you'll use a mobility scooter without need and then figuring out a year later that you can no longer walk.
