it’s almost like most terminally online leftists aren’t committed to actually building the structures necessary for a socialist society to work because they’re instead actually libertarians who say “Give me, give me, chicken tendies; Be they crispy, or from Wendy's”
stancil said anti-spreadsheet communism leads to replicating non-progressive individual charity in the form of mutual aid, and that folk who go all in on this cannot functionally develop societal aid structures that don't involve passing around the same money until it all gets eaten by gofundme fees

Mutual aid isn't scalable and cannot replace governments, and replicating evangelical anti-government charity rhetoric, but leftishly, is bad and harmful, actually.
Are we really doing mutual aid discourse again?

The number of times I've seen anarchists reinvent cops and then deny they're cops is quite funny.

Fuck me at least us liberals admit that we need police and policing, albeit very much reformed!

What if we built a massive mutual aid system that we pay a certain portion of our wages into to help fund it and designated an elected entity to run it with oversight. We could call it something like a....'government,' maybe. The fees could be a 'tax,' as it were.
Mutual aid at a societal scale would only work if you assume that people generally do not care about fraud and that is extremely not the case.

Also you saw real beginning of the broader democratic decline in the people claiming the primary was “rigged”. You don’t have Trump’s “big lie” without that. It is what it is.

You gotta understand that these are people who were like “It will be bad if republicans get power” and they were overwhelmed by their friends crying about Wikileaks revelations. Ahistorical to not view it at least somewhat through this prism. Past is prologue etc

It’s not fandom. That’s a misread. It’s secondary effect of being online circa 2016. You can’t overstate how the demotivational stuff and certain particularly dumb narratives about the election were just oppressive and EVERYWHERE. A lot of libs became aggro after that.
Yeah there is definitely a tendency within democratic party politics that is absolutely toxically devoted to democratic party leadership as like, a fandom or something

Also ironic is the "we've got to try something new" as if these kinds of projects haven't been done before to varying degrees of success.

For example: Andrew Yang's UBI experiment didn't get him elected and didn't advance UBI advocacy!

I genuinely do not understand why people feel the need to reformulate all charity work as "mutual aid".

You simply do not need to be negatively polarized against nonprofits by the very right-wing you claim to hate!

Nothing in my posts disagrees with this in any way, but if you're against nit picking people actually doing good, progressive spaces are probably not your bag.
it's good for people to get aid. it's good to give people aid. it's good when public figures and politicians model positive behaviors like giving aid. it's good as a campaign tactic both for branding and earned media purposes. it's bad to sit online and nitpick someone actually doing good

It's wild that George had to explain my point to some folks who clearly did not understand it.

We can examine Andrew Yang's UBI experiment for another data point in the experiment!
1) private charity is trivial compared to mobilized government resources

2) mutual aide acts at a far smaller scale than formal charities

3) as you say participating in either is good worthwhile

4) we should be clear eyed that “feels good, does good, good PR” doesn’t make either sufficient

Bud, when a campaign takes in donations and gives orgs/groups money or items, that is a charity.

There need to be well-funded aid institutions that are obligated to be blind to social & ideological differences, and the easiest way to do that is tax-funded social programs.

It's way too contingent on being the right sort of person to the people with influence to help ensure you get the aid you need.

And as we all know, it's a meme how much leftists actively despise slightly different sorts of leftists.

My contribution to the mutual aid discourse:

when I was in an extremely bad spot in 2022, the pro-mutual aid parts of Left Twitter actively tried to sabotage me getting help, and when I got help from the wrong place (the crypto space), they sent me death threats for months
